Funny moon tonight...

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Biffa Bacon \(mobile\), Mar 2, 2006.

  1. Noticed, yes, almost thought about stopping and photographing it, but it was
    to cold & snowy.

Looked like an eclipse stylee thang, there was a bright crescent effort in
the bottom right corner, with the rest of the moon silouhetted in grey.

Did anyone else notice a peculiar moon tonight? You could see the dark
portion... Any ideas as to why this may be?

The dark portion is illuminated by earthlight. If you were on the moon, the
earth would appear full, and a lot bigger (and brighter) than the moon does
from the earth. The phenomenon is known as "the old moon in the new moon's
arms" or vice versa, depending on phase.

Quite normal, as explained elsewhere. When there's virtually no moon
it's becasue the sun is pretty much behind it, hence it sets soon
after the sun. Consequently, much of the earth's surface that's facing
it it still in sunlight, so it's a reflection of a reflection, made
more visible because of the almost total absence of directly-reflected
    light.

No, it would be an ecclipse if the sun was behind the earth or if it
was _directly_ behind the moon. "Pretty much behind it" != "completely
    in line".
