Funny old world

  1. Now that we've moved offices to London, and the suits have finished
running the rules over us all and our various operations, they've
decided where they're going to invest and develop.

Which is my little operation. It's being expanded massively, as other
smaller titles are being merged into it, and so my staff doubles.

Downside: got four weeks to get this new giant onto presses and web
    screens. Erk.

When the suits mentioned the words "Managing (insert title here)", I
gently explained that I'd spent my working life doing what I do and not
pushing papers and working out budgets, and didn't want to do it.

"You won't be. We want you hands-on."

  2. Right on. Management sucks. On the tools is definitely the way to live
    ones career.

    <fx: desperately clutching at straws>

so, you're in need of an IT-literate project/staff manager with some
experience in the publishing industry, are you?

Well maybe you can distribute your knowledge of free proxy servers.
I've been trying to find and use one for something very simple (1) in
another part of the world for a couple of hours. Nada. If I do connect using
their webpage = no java etc = useless

all this hype about the Chinese can easily get around the Great Firewall
using proxies is I suspect overstated

    (1) Just a feckin Yahoo signup

Don't I fucking know it. I earned more when I was in a hands on role
and I didn't get swamped with bullshit the way I do these days.

    That's what I thought.

When he spots it and mentions it, he'll be told not to worry as they
only need him to apply lightweight governance. Which means that they
still need all the same activities and artefacts, but they're not going
to mandate the process required to achieve them.

Nor allocate time or resources to deliver it; the decision not to
mandate a process will allow TOG to do all that stuff in a highly
efficient way tagged on to the side of his day job

It never presented much of a problem for me when in China. TOR goes
straight through allowing access to the BBC et al.
