garage conversion forces V5 to V5C?

    Hi

I've had a moth balled fj1200 in the garage for the last 5 years (which
just happens to be when the firstborn came along). Garage conversion
necessitates adios FJ. Now I've got a V5 but allegedly need a V5C. Can
I just apply for it or will I get clobbered over this SORN thingy!

I've never received any correspondance from DVLA so what to do? Just
sell bike using V5 as is?

    TIA!

DaveMiles () gurgled happily, sounding much like they
    were saying :
If it was last taxed five years ago, it should be SORNed anyway... SORN
came into play in 1998. You would have got a V5C through automagically if
    it was being SORNed.

SORN really isn't a hassle - when you get the annual tax/SORN reminder, you
can just go online and SORN it on the website in about a minute flat. Or
tick one box and do it at the PO. I dunno why people are afraid of it...
You certainly can do. The purchaser'd get a V5C back from DVLA. They'd need
to SORN or tax it anyway.

    Thanks for the reply.

I honestly with hand on heart can't recall ever receiving a "thou shalt
convert thy V5 to V5C" from the powers that be. Doing some google's
indicates that thier system did crash way back and many did not receive
such dictates. V5 it is then!

    Best Regards

I thought that if a bike hadn't been registered for some years then the V5C
reminder wasn't sent and if you didn't remember to send the V5 to the DVLA
    for conversion, the registration lapsed.

Maybe I'll try it with one of the boxes of bits in the shed that haven't been
    taxed for years.

Eiron () gurgled happily, sounding much like they were
    saying :
Cut-off date was vehicles that were actively being taxed/SORNed - so Jan
    '98 last use/change-of-ownership. Except - as with this - there's some that
    fell out of SORN.
They didn't send a reminder - they just sent a V5C automagically after you
taxed/SORNed it. At least, that's the way it worked with all of mine...
Some had never been within SORN, so I had to write to 'em for a V5C. I
think I've got 'em all now.
That was the logic, but they found so many they'd "forgotten about" that
    they extended it indefinitely.

    Or forget to do it.

£40 fine please, plus unpaid duty.

    Do remember to SORN, chaps.
