For security what's the best option,

    1. A well secured 'up and over' (large centre bolt at the bottom, staple
and hasp buried in concrete padlocked to the bottom corners and the
whole door reinforced with 2x4 lengths of wood, or
    2. A roller shutter door.

Sources for suitable 6'6" x 7' doors would be appreciated.

Electric motors and keyless entry isn't an option I fancy.

So do I. A couple of alligators would be better.

Roller shutters are more secure, certainly the pikey area shops seem to
swear by them. Quite noisy though, if you're fond of early starts.

My up and over door is GRP, not steel, so wouldn't survice a brute
force attack for very long, hence cunning shenannigans involving hefty
lumps of welded chain on the bikes.

    Cheers

    Paul.

I live in the sticks about 4 miles from the nearest town without
neighbours overlooking my property. And with abso-fucking-lutely useless
policing (cunts didn't return my calls when the garage break in attempt
    occurred).

It's not a question of 'pikey', when you live in a rural area.

I don't have any neighbours so the noise isn't an issue.

Not sure that the use by shops is a great indication because I would
(guess) they don't have a great choice with respect to space etc.
I want to avoid the cunts getting in at all- I can't secure the tools
which would be a bigger trauma than the bikes going. I don't think
anyone would bother for the bikes in reality...

From my time working in the Intruder Alarm business: Well, yes and no.

Yes it would be nice if you can stop them coming in but as you can't you
have to come up with solutions. The first of these is to make sure that
easy(er) access is through an area controlled and monitored by you.
Essentially you make it slow, hard, work for them to bust into your
inner defences and then use Video and the MkI Eyeball as your ultimate
toy in your collection of anti scrote tools.

Easily said of course and kin expensive to implement but effective.

emerged from their own little world to say
I have a mate who is a carpenter. He has a workshop at home, a rural
location, plus a van that is full of expensive kit. They have been robbed
twice. On both occasions the thieves must have had a van to remove the
amount of kit that went. After the first break in the security on the
workshop was improved but this did not stop the fuckers getting in.
Consequently, the mate has made it difficult for anyone to get a vehicle
near the workshop by erecting some large gates on the drive. This seems to
have deterred any return by the thieves.

I have a cheapy alarm on my shed, and a Tomy baby alarm.

I also have some reasonably offensive signage.

    So far no attempted break-ins.

WRT tools, how about getting a "Van Vault" type box from Screwfix, and
    bolting it to the floor.

Have you considered paint mines (sticky indellible dye) and for when
you're at home a baby alarm... You can prolly get a fairly cheap and
easy to fit camera/CCTV rigged up to your computer, dunno how good a
    deterent they are tho'...

Hadn't considered this. I had thought about building some kind of a
metal guard around the area I keep tools in though. Thanks. Food for
    thought.

    Fuckers.

Unfortunately it's a shared access road so this one won't work. Pity
    because I'd like this.

  18. Friend on mine just had her uncle's house raided by pikey cunts while
he's in hospital. He has a remote farmhouse a mile up a track and the
nearest neighbour at least two miles off.

They cleaned the place out - every stick of furniture and even emptied
    the diesel tank.

    Utter, utter cunts.

When angry about this kind of stuff (after an attempted break in) I
hoped something truely horrible happened to the cunts that did it.

However, when I stopped and thought about it, something horrible has
probably already happened to them- their lives.

The best thing about a moat is that once you are alerted to the
presence of the light-fingered scum - you can nip out and tip over the
prepared barrels of petrol, allowing it to flow across the water
surface. Then just as they're crossing the bridge ...
