I think at least one person here has one (Greybeard?).

I read elsewhere that it 'nags' you to sign up to some subscription
service. Is that so? Can it be disabled?

    TIA

You mean the Zumo 550. I have one, and it's never nagged me.

It has, twice, displayed a screen reminding me to check for map updates
("your mapping data is more than a year old...") but that's it.

    Not mine.
You can disable most things that you don't want on it.
I don't even use the Garmin Speed Camera Database.
The only nagging I get is from SWMBO, and I wish I could find an off switch
    sometimes ;o)

Whoever wrote that article is talking out their arse.
I've never had to join any "club" with mine, and I think I got one of the
first in the UK when they were released for sale.
You do have to join mygarmin.com or something when unlocking maps, but that
    doesn't cost anything.
