A week ago, due to the mistake with the alcohol free becks, it kicked me
into thinking why do i drink. So, a week later & not a drop has passed my
    lips.

I feel great, wide awake, not in the slightest bit tired.

    Less irritable & generaly happy.

Thought i would miss it, but not a chance. Quite surprised to be honest.

For a moment there, I thought you were referring to having a fling with
    a sober posh spice.
Time to give up all those other energy sapping habits now?

I stopped drinking on Sunday through to Thursday evenings a while ago
    now.

Feels much better going into work without feeling any of the effects of
    alcohol.

Although I can still put 'em away pretty well on a night out - I have
found myself increasingly shite feeling in the mornings - even after
    just a couple of cans.

I have only just recently started drinking at home since the loss of my
missus (a perfect example of death by whisky), mostly the odd can of
Guiness. Until then I was onto 2-3 cans a night, although I could always
    take or leave booze myself.

I got a bottle of red wine a couple of weeks ago, and just felt ill
    after that.

No, I don't miss it either, also very much less tired all the time too.
Annoyingly enough, my cholesterol has crept up a little!

    I just thought, why bother?

I'm not aiming to stop boozing, just to knock it down a lot.

Indeed. My reaction was very much knee-jerk at the time. Now I just have
something because I want to enjoy it.

There's nowt wrong with having a bevvie or two, but I do think you need
to be clear as to why you're having it.

I gave up drinking during week nights a few years back, as it was
getting stupid, and the day after effects were getting worse, so now
only have a drink on a Friday or Saturday night.

It made a profound difference to my week, and I dont miss it at all.

Although oddly, I have starting having the odd small scotch of a night
time of late, but thats nothing to worry about.

If not drinking is the only change you've made and you've lost 4k in
under a week I'd say you were drinking way too much before you
    stopped.

    Yes I was

mind you with the drinking comes late night snacking, which also plays a
    part

My biggest failing is going for beers straight from work. I know I
should go to my hotel room and watch tv when I'm away from home but I
    can't be arsed.

Except alcohol consumption causes the body to retain more water, so
it's likely the gain is mostly spare fluid.

And restaurant meals have a tendency not to be the healthiest option

It all has to do with water retention in the first few days, doesn't it

    only if someone has cirrhosis

with most people, alcohol causes the reverse as a hangover is a symptom of
    dehydration
