Something of a grey area round here. AFAIK there is no official policy,
but some people have been levered out on it.

Until I retired I worked in just such an office. The whole hospital
was alcohol free, and we weren't even allowed to have a beer at
lunchtime if we popped down the pub for a sarnie.

I'm not sure I'd work for a company with such a policy. Even though
it's extremely rare for me to have a lunchtime drink[1], the job would
have to be extremely fucking good and extremely well paid for me to
allow a company that much control over what I could and couldn't do in
    my own time.

[1] It's happened maybe half a dozen times in the three years I've been
    here.

It will probably be made illegal in a few years. Control, control,
    control.
Then that. The thin end of the wedge, see?
I used to, many years ago and have two or three pints. I really
couldn't do that now - not without falling asleep at my desk.

Well I thought it was a good rule. The reasoning was simple. It was
deemed unacceptable for nurses, doctors etc to breathe beer fumes over
patients, and in the interest of fairness it was agreed that all staff
should abide by the same rule, whatever the department they worked in.

I can see that the rule might apply to "customer-facing" staff, I don't
have a problem with that. Applying the rule across the board seems very
    unfair to me.

Similar reasoning for the railway when the 1992 T&WA came in.

This is for Champ as well. One difficulty is deciding where to draw
the line. There are a lot of non-clinical staff who come into contact
with patients - ancilliary staff such as porters and domestics,
administrative staff such as medical secretaries, receptionists and
ward clerks, technical staff working in patient areas such as
instrument technicians and works staff. In fact there are few staff
who are unlikely ever to get within breathing distance of a patient or
    visitor.

The simple answer is that if taking alcohol in your lunch break is a
freedom you wish to protect, don't work in a hospital. *You* might
think it unfair - none of us did. I think that shows commendable team
    spirit.

Oh, and don't complain if some member of hospital staff breathes beer
    in your face in future!

I can't see what all the fuss about going to the pub on a lunch break
is anyhow, after all they've got all those handy booze dispensers on
    the wall around hospitals.

Same here. And our contract of employment states that we mustn't
    drink during working hours.

Not that it stops anyone, but I guess it's a lever if anyone get's
    pissed.

    Bavaria / Franconia ?

Directly outside the main door to the main workshop there were 4 beer
vending machines, workers could buy crates of beer in the canteen shop
to take back to their machine

In the department I worked in (developing a steerable 1kW Laser) you
were expected to put on a spread (barrel of beer and food) if it was
your birthday, wedding, kids christening etc

so, in a department of 25 - that meant almost every friday
    I don't operate such a policy

Well ultimately it was going to be a more powerful chemical laser

.... for knocking out missiles on a sunny day

fairly high speed adaptive optics were involved

we almost killed a security guard who wandered into the firting range to
see why the red lights were flashing once

    prolly pissed as a fart
