gearbox death?

  1. Hi,

My 40k miles 1991 GSX600F has started making a clunking noise ONLY in
second gear. Sounds and feels similar to what happens when a chain
    slips on a sprocket,

The other gears are all fine, so it isn't the chain.

So without being a gearbox expert my guess is that the second gear is
slipping on whatever holds it tight. Any idea what this is?

A second question is how much metal will have been broken off to allow
this to happen? And where will this have gone? How big is the chance
that these fragments may jam something critical if I continue to ride
it? (The bike is probably now to be scrapped as a gearbox repair is
    prob not worthwhile)

    Cheers for any help
    Steve

  2. Yup, the dogs have gone on second.
Well, it's wear rather than breakage.
Oh, it won't jam anything. Like I said, it's just steady wear, and maybe
abuse. As you say, a repair isn't worth it - engine out and turned
upside down, crankcases split - it'll cost hundreds and hundreds.

Well, if it was mine and all else was fine I'd just shift from first to

    This all sounds excellent news.

You've just saved me a hasty replacement purchase in time for a track
day I'd already booked for next Thursday!

    Many thanks!

  5. .... is what I did for about 40K miles after buying a bike from a ****
who never used the clutch if he could avoid it.
