    Hi all;

    I have a 1979 Harley XLS; the generator light comes on after everything's
    good and warmed up, though there seems to be good power available when the
    system is still cold.

    The battery is in decent shape, and I just replaced the generator brushes
    (hoping to luck out). Any ideas what else this might be? I hate to replace
    the regulator on a whim, though, outside the generator itself, I don't know
    what else it could be (field coils?)

    Any ideas? Thanks,
    Dan.

    Just an update - there's no longer good generator output while the system is
    cold. Apparently it was just failing gradually. Last night, after
    bump-starting, the generator light was on bright from the very start and
    stayed on all the way home.

    Thanks, David; Actually the regulator on mine is a solid-state board, but
    that firms up my suspicions that it's gone bad. I'll check the easty stuff,
    like loose connectors first, but then the regulator will be the next thing
    to go...
