Genuine number plate disguise gadget - wtf?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Apr 10, 2011.

  1. We were heading out of town, and a bloke on a Gixxer Thou came past on
the Mad Mile. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Then, at the lights, he was stopped, and I realised I couldn't read the
top line of his number plate *at all*. There was a sort of wavy
snake-like two-tone red and green line weaving over and around it. The
Doctor and I were bemused, because it hadn't been there when he came
    past us.

And then he let go of the brake lever, the brake light went out, and....

.... the number was magically legibile again.

And he put the brake on again and....

    ....it disappeared.

Right, wtf is this gadget? Some form of projector built into the brake
light? Something concealed in the licence plate? I've never seen
anything like it, and I rather want one.

It was inevitable, once you stopped calling them "registration marks".

I'd like to get a number plate made from that glass that goes black
when you apply a voltage to it.

That would seem to be the wrong way round, apart from anything else.
IWHT it was more likely to attract plod when he's behind you at the
lights, and blatting through cameras, you'd need to be braking.

  8. Agreed. I'd want it on under acceleration, not braking. If you are
    braking, it's too late.

Close, but no cigar. What you really want is an LCD plate that displays
your registration number. You would of course need to be able to
program it so you can move it from bike to bike, probably with stored
numbers that can be selected at the flick of a switch...

Except that you'd be pretty noticeable riding around with a fucked number
plate that magically came to life when you hit the brakes.

Surely having it the original way would mean not being pulled for **** all,
but blasting past a camera with enough pressure on the back brake to switch
the brake lights on but nt slow you down would mean you're not about to
    receive a NIP.

That could be incorporated, but linking to the brakes removes any thought
needed as a camera suddenly appears.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to line up for an Attempt to Pervert
charge and watching their bike being carted off to the pound (and possibly
    destroyed).
If you want to be leery then ride with a broken number plate and give
    yourself a chance.

Or just accept the fact that if you wish to live above the law, sooner or
    later you will get caught.

I do & have, as 99% of folk on bikes that can do 0-60 in 3 seconds or so do.

Stop worrying, enjoy the fucking thing & take it like a man when you get
nabbed, that or **** off as fast as you can & let them prove it was you
    riding it :)

  20. I'd just want a switch that I could thumb on when I wanted it.

I recall a guy I met on a ride in the 80s who had another choke lever
on the bike. Asked him what it was for and he showed me. He had his
licence plate on a spring. Hit the lever and the plate swung up and
    was unreadable.
