got a new moped after realise how much i was paying for monthly
    travelcards on the tube (london).

do mopeds get caught by speed cameras? i'm not talking about police on
a hard shoulder with a radar gun but the regular yellow boxes, with the
white "measurement" markings on the road.

its not that i'm planning to speed altogether, but if i do go 40mph on
a clear road (my moped is a 125cc - so maybe some would call it a
scooter) will the camera pick me up. i'm hoping i'm too small. failing
that if i'm close to another car at the time, will the camera be unable
to distinguish which one of us it is?

how about bus lanes. i know it's not legal, but do bus lane cameras
"pick up" a zippy little moped/scooter?

ps. checked the FAQs, nothing clear about this

You see Ash. Mopeds are like fat birds. Fun to ride but you wouldn't
want your mates to find out.

is it /really/ a moped, or is it a scooter. I.e. does it have pedals
that you can use to assist the motor?

I'm constantly amazed that scooterists tend to wear open-face lids. If
I ever have to ride one, I'm damn sure I don't want anyone recognising
    me.

    no pedals. but i thought <50cc = moped, >50cc = scooter, pedals =
    motorbike

    no?

i wear the full helmet. and good gloves.

and hey, i don't care. i'm only using it for city riding, neither i,
the guy on the harley ahead of me at the lights, or my old honda civic
can go more than 40 anywhere along my daily route to work and all of us
    average 20mph.

No, pedals <126cc = 16 years old, pedals = bicycle.

Hmm. brings me back to original topic:

Are the speed cameras as adept in recording motorbike/scooter-style
numberplates as regular car ones. i.e. do they automatically read the
numberplates like the congestion-zone cameras or does some clerk
    manually decode them?

    Unfortunately, yes.

Obviously forward facing (as in take a picture of the front of a vehicle)
do have a problem when faced with bikes/mopeds/scooters.

I thought that mopeds are bikes of less than 50cc that are restricted to
    30 mph.

Back in the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth the criteria was that they
had to be under 50cc and capable of being propelled by pedal power. Hence
pre 1979 FSIE's, AP50's and their ilk had bicycle pedals which were utterly
useless other than to satisfy the law.

I once tried to pedal my mate's Puch M50, it was impossible.

You burn him to ashes, grind him up then sell the resulting powder to
    impotent Japanese bussiness men.

Sadly, all too regularly. I've seen burglars get away with less than a £100
fine, which is the punishment - so unless you're on the A13, A41 or M4,
    don't do it.

My moped scooter I had once used that system, and a restrictor in the
    exhaust.
    45mph actual speed?

I had a Honda PC50, you had to pedal if you wanted to start off from a
    hill.

It wasn't legal then and had been derestricted by the dealer.
