    Hopefully.

There's no lock washer between the "steering adjustment nut" and the
    "steering stem lock nut".

    But there should be.

That'll be why it keeps needing to be re-torqued, then.

Ho hum - only £4.40 plus VAT for a new washer.

Please let this be an end to it.

But to quote Eric Morecambe, "not necessarily in the right order".

Fark nose. Like a good child, as I dismantled the head thingy, I
diligently put everything back on the end, like it says, to protect
the thread. I've even got a vague memory of bending tabs into grooves,
but there certainly isn't a tab washer between those two nuts right
    now.

Of course, this is going to entail taking the self-cancelling
indicator wiring apart again - then trying to reconnect it down the
    middle of the headstock.

    Deep joy.

Just a thought, but if this dismantling of part of the loom is such
hassle, and a regular occurrence, is it worth making up some sort of
extension that can be disconnected at either end? How many wires are we
    talking about?

Well, it didn't need doing at all until you suggested that I might as
well do the steering head bearings while the forks were out. Normal
frequency would appear to be every 8yrs/80k or thereabouts.
    It has crossed my mind.
Three. I think. Might even be two.

I think the point is he was hoping this wasn't going to be a regular
    occurence ;-)

  9. I had a fuckwit moment the other day when I was wiring up two PC PSUs in
parallel... luckily nothing destructive happened. It all works
    spiffingly now.

  10. I'm surprised you haven't done that already. 12 or 20 might be a pain
finding a connector for, though RS are good at that kind of thing.

As it turns out: broke the tabs off, and mashed it up between the two
    nuts.

    Still, it's been replaced now.

I took the Font's advice and created a longer cable for the self
cancelling switch. It was six wires, not three. Which was fun.

I also took the opportunity to finish angle grinding a 32mm socket to
fit the castellated nut on the headstock. Lovely snug fit on the nut
it was - until I threaded the nut over the steering stem, and found
that the socket wasn't deep enough - by about an inch and a half. Oh
well, only half an hour wasted.

Finally got it all bolted up, took it out for a spin round the block -
and it's clonk clonk clonk again. Fukkit.

Question to the Font: when doing up your steering bearings, is it:

A: centre stand, wheel on floor
B: centre stand - wheel off the floor, or
    C: Sidestand.

    I'll have another go tomorrow.

To round off a perfect day's fettling, I took delivery of some
replacement bodywork bits for the Wing, too.

    1. A new pillion cubby box door - ordered because of the broken latch.
    2. A new screen vent - to fit the new screen.

    What do I find?

    1. The new door has no latch fitted - that's a separate part.
    2. The screen vent only comprises the bit that attaches to the rear of
the screen - the bit on the front is a separate part, too.

So it's another 'phone call to Tippetts on Monday, then. I might as
well get a couple of new hinges for the rhs pannier lid, too.

It's a good job I've given up the fags, or I couldn't afford this. :)

Ta. So, the reason the nut is hard to turn is because I'm attempting
to lift the whole front end of a GoldWing up through the headstock
(iyswim) with an iddle biddy C spanner, right?
Just wot I dun, but it still clunked after.

Good point. It'll all be clear in the morning, no doubt.
Now they are okay - this I know. They're only four weeks old.
I think it's the brake caliper again.

  14. No probs. Got a welder? Cut a piece of pipe and cut the socket. Weld in
    an extension.

  15. Sit on bike with normal weight on it. Bounce up and down a couple of
times to settle it and tighten it. Carefully set the locknut without
    overtightening the main nut.

No clearer, but I undid it all, and did it up again, and all seems
    okay.

    For now.

Nah. No welder. It's in the bin, now.

I might just add the "special tool" to my shopping list.
