Don't get me wrong, I love live music but this whole over-hyped, in
association with, corporate festival shit does nothing for me at all.

Partly I'm at an age where the thought of spending the weekend in a
swamp with a load of students, Indie Cindys & midlife crisis
wanabees[1] really doesn't appeal to me.

I'd go if I had a motorhome where I could lock away my stuff, have a
shower, cook breakfast and shit in peace. But even then it all sounds
like a massive brain washing exercise by major brands. There's a
massive "media" where you can surf the net charge your phone etc.. and
it's all orange, no logo's just orange.

On a related note, if you are watching coverage on TV, please be awe
struck by the incredible engraved & laser cut Perspex set provided by
    me :)

Yep, have to agree. Too old & not enough patience for fuckwits like
those. Nowt nice about drowning in fucking tons of mud. Catching trench
foot or rabies or whatever you like.

I'm going to the V festival in Chelmsford this summer but that's much
smaller and only 20 minutes down the road. There are lots of smaller
events throughout the year which are much more fun and far less
"Branded" if you bother to Google. There might not be the big names
playing but at least you can get closer than half a mile from the
    stage.

My festival days are done, been to a few good ones & a good few great
gigs over me life. As memorable gigs go, The Pogues at Leeds Uni in 1987
    is fucking right up there.

Saw The Killers at Manchester Apollo last year, right before they went
bigtime & brought out a seriously shit CD. They did rock I have to say.

    Me too.
    <fx:thinks>

Best Festival: Pink Floyd at Knebworth. Also Queen at Knebworth was
memorable for having my Z1100R knicked from the car park.
Best Gig: too many, really. Queen @ Hammy O in 1978, Marillion at
Guildford Uni in 1982 (IIRC) spring to mind although I've been to some
cracking ones recently too (see below).
They did at Brixton Academy too. Got the tickets off eBay at a
"premium" price rather than see them at Wembley Arena.

It's been nearly 20 years, and I've been trying to forget ever since.
Took us about 3 hrs to get out of the park, IIRC. Could have done with
    a bike.

We camped, which was a good thing as we were extremely pissed by the
    end of the gig!

My experience of Glastonbury'05 [1] was that the branding was only
present in the main arenas and the green fields were still much as they
were 20 yrs ago. So that's where I spent most of the festival.

Exactly. In 1981, minus the media hype and bollox, I would've enjoyed
    it too.
    Just rub it's tits.

That's the only way I'd do it.

The BiL performs there every year and has the good sense to rent a
    cottage nearby.

Not forgetting of course that it'll be packed out with willing pissed
up Essex slappers who'll do anything for another bottle of bitch-piss.
Do you think I'm getting a little cynical in my old age?

  18. Ditto - fecking excellent. Following (iirc, might have been '83) year
    was a mudbath.
Never went back after that - at that time the attendance was 25K or so
and that was too big, imo. I can't imagine what it's like with 178K
there - what is the point of that?

I'm impressed that the Wurzels turned it down as they weren't going to
be on the Pyramid stage. Lovely.

With the sole exception of the Orange tent (where they provide free
mobile recharging), the Guardian lounge, the free Q mini-newspaper every
day and the Carlsberg logos on the beer cups, Glastonbury is about as
    branding-free a festival as you'll find anywhere.

Unless, of course, you mean brands like "Water Aid", "Greenpeace", "Drop
the Debt" and their ilk, which are beneficiaries, not sponsors.
