From what I hear up north the population is considered epidemic levels. Some states allow the hunters to kill two or three now, under one license. My brother inlaw went out last year and killed two, he was going to kill another, but no one wanted it so he didn't bother.
i've used a .243 Model 70 Winchester with great success. Also have a ..270 Weatherby, but that's almost overkill. One well placed shot is all you need. A .222 can do the job if you're a decent shot.
