Good roads in Bavaria

We're planning to spend a couple of weeks or so this summer in
southern Germany, possibly straying into Austria. We'll probably end
up pretty much everywhere mentioned in this thread
    http://groups.google.co.uk/group/uk.rec.motorcycles/browse_thread/thread/d857faeaee647f7f
but there's little mention in it of must-ride roads. Anyone got
anything to add, or is it just a case of doing the Alpenstrasse and
picking promising-looking detours from the map?

  2. The RomanticRoad is known for its stereotypical Germen-ness.

Its actually quite scenic with some lovely towns to visit en route.

Good thought - we might go home along part of it.

I also meant to ask generally about hotels people can recommend.

Thanks. Not much in Germany, but a couple to try certainly. The
    Steinpass looks nice.

The towns are lovely, the road is mostly dull with lots of HGVs.

A route I took to get from Munich to the Austria-Slovenia border near
    Villach:

blast south along the A8 until the B318 turning for Föching, go south to
Tegernsee, pick up the B308 to the Austrian border then B181 south to
Achensee. Cross under the A12 motorway onto the B169 to Zell am Zimmer.
Then take the B165 across to Mittersil. This road includes a super section
over the Gerlos Bundestrasse and an excellent view of the Krimml falls.

From Mittersil I went south via Felber Tauern to Lienz and beyond. One of
the best days I've had on a bike. Apart from a couple of short sections of
motorway to get away from Munich and around Villach it was all Alpine
    wonder.

If you want to head back north to Bavaria from Mittersil then the B161
through Kitzbuhel is a good one to make a circular route.

  10. Mmm..... last year I used :

    bavarian fodder.

http://www.hirsch-kempten.de/h/ in Kempten - Comfortable hotel, Superb
    Italian fodder.

    http://www.fuerstenhof-kempten.de/fe/index.php?plink=start in Kempten -

http://www.hotel-eder.de/pages/main-e.html in Munich - Comfortable Hotel in
    a very handy location.

And a couple of airport hotels not worth mentioning.

SE of Koblenz, an easy ride to/from a Channel port. Excellent food. The
owner has a Ducati track bike parked in the foyer and likes to talk about
the Nurburgring, which is not far away.

Well, the best roads are usually found in the Alps (surprise, that) but
Bavaria in Summer is going to be rather crowded. The GermanPlod doesn't
like filtering (it's illegal over there) so don't get caught.

Not to mention that some of the better biking roads are closed to
motorbikes on weekends because the locals complained etc.

Of course you could always go a tad further into Switzerland, stay at
my mum's B&B and explore some proper Alpine roads including this:

    http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=pa
    sso+di+stelvio&sll=54.162434,-3.647461&sspn=16.984779,35.859375&ie=UTF8&
    ll=46.531292,10.456924&spn=0.038854,0.070038&t=h&z=14&om=1

which is about 50 miles away and supposedly one of the best driving
    roads in Europe.

It'll be late summer - possibly into September.
    Will watch for that.
    Where is that roughly?
That's for another year. We went up the Stubaital last year, and plan
to go back and have a better look around the area.

  15. It is?

    Interesting.

There's been a long thread running on reeky about filtering, with the
know-nothings saying it's dangerous, and those who do it all the tiume
saying it's OK, and legal in just about every European country.

I thought all the EU allowed it, but somebody said Germany banned it.

Ok, that should be after the crowds left.
Yep, especially because on some of them, local plod has a "cashpoint" a
    few miles behind the sign.
    Tschlin in the Engadin.

Let me know if you're interested - I can't promise UKRM discounts or
anything, but it's pretty cheap for the area, she speaks English and
there's secure parking for the bikes in her barn. If you're brave
    enough to ride in there.

Never been legal in Germany, AFAIK. Mind ewe, you sometimes get the
impression that they're doing their best to get rid of motorbikes
alltogehter with the hoops you need to jump through to get a license
    and all that.

When I think about it the only time we've had a car move over and
deliberately stop us from filtering it was a German - but in
    Switzerland.

    (The Older Gentleman) wrote in
    Illegal in Austria too.

On the route I described to Colin above, two of the riders in my group were
given 15 Euro fines in Lienz. They had committed the lethal crime of riding
to the front of a line of traffic at a set of lights.

Plod was 50m the other side of the junction, having a field day pulling in
a variety of non-Germanic riders, as the road is one of the main non-
motorway E-W routes. Lienz is also at the southern end of the most famous
Austrian pass, the Grossglockner, so observing their traffic regs is
recommended within a 20 mile radius.
