Is it me, or has that helpful page where you could confine a search to
a specific newsgroup, such as ukrm, and author and key words and time
    frame disappeared?

As others have said: it's just you.

However, be aware that the "group" search is currently somewhat broken,
and may not return the results that you expect if you use wildcards in
    the group name.

even within a group, search is pretty broken.

I see you've found your answer, but I had this exact experience
yesterday - take one route, you get one page, another and you get a
    different one.

Not that I am suggesting that I could do better -
however, I get the idea that Google Groups is
not being run by the sharpest tool in the Google Box.

    Google Groups did not receive
usenet messages for the whole weekend of
both 5 Oct and 26 Oct. Most disturbing is that
the Google Groups Help Group had a number of
user comments - as one might expect - but had
exactly NO response from Google regarding two
    outages of several days each.

My question is - what other Google 'services' might
    be abandoned at Google's whim?

You can get round it a bit by including, say, 2008 in the "all these
    words" search field.
