When burnt and I were tending a broken Guzzi somewhere in Germany it
quickly became apparent we'd need to tell the breakdown people where we
    were.

    Oh, ****.

    Google Maps Mobile is impressive.

    Well done Mr. B.

Google Maps is a generally important area for development IMO, hence my
"KML happy dance" post last week.

I presume you found the - show me where I am
button - that triangulates the GSM signal to get
a rough location? Could be handy if lost^w temporarily
    uncertain of your position.

Works in the UK anyway. Of course it presumably
allows even more people to track your every
    breath.

What's the limiting factor behind which handsets support it? Mi SE
    k610i doesn't - anyone know why?

Bad form etc. I'm referring only to the 'My Position' feature, of
    course.

It's written in Mobile Java so that might be it. Work on my K800i.

Ah, according to the blurb it tries to nail down which cell tower
you're using. It's got me to within about 250 metres of where I am,
but I'm in a pretty built up area with lots of towers. I imagine it's
less good out in the sticks.

I'm in the middle of a major city, so it ain't that. Anyway, it quite
clearly states, in the Help menu, that the function is not available
    on this equipment.

Actually, it says it all in French, as there deosn't seem any way to
    change the language.

I also have 2.0.2 on O2, and it doesn't work for me either (on a SE

Dunno. My work K800i on Orange gets a location, my personal K800i on
    Orange doesn't.

    Champ wibbled
    Samsung D600 on O2 doesn't ... I'll try it on my sons D500 on T-mobile,
and my wifes Nokia summat or other on Virgin tonight.

Good little app though, and could be v. v. useful.

Exactly the same. I flashed them both to the same generic SE firmware
when I got them as the Orange stuff is crap. I reckon it's either
signal strength or internet connectivity. The personal one goes
through Orange WAP access point because it's free whereas the work on
goes through Orange Internet access point because I have an unlimited
    company data plan.

Ahh, I wonder if that might be a commonality appearing? Certainly mine
goes though the default Orange connection (although it's Orange
France, using the Orange CH netwrok where I'm sat at work).
