Bear emerged from their own little world to say
    Don't think so.

Andrew Marr was just babbling on about Strawman doing a Major style soapbox
thing in his constituency a couple of times a month

Back in Toryworld, my local MP, for an English constituency, was a minister
in the Welsh Office. He still held surgeries in his caravan at Ross on Wye
    cattle market.

Not judging by what they were saying about Jack Straw - might be a
total arse, but takes his responsibilities in Blackburn very
    seriously, apparently.

  11. Read the Tom Bower book. No, READ THE TOM BOWER BOOK. It's been rushed out
in paperback, with extra material that I haven't read yet. Shall we just
say that ... Brown does not come out of it well, and your assessment of him
    seems unduly flattering.

  13. Yebbut, you are not putting yourself forward as the putative Prime Minister
of a [still] rather important country. For years we have been fed this
image of Gordy as the dour, loyal, responsible guardian of the nation's
wallet, a bit dull but a man you can trust to do the right thing. I mean,
    you'd rather a bank-manager was running the money than a semi-numerate,
would-be vicar like Wor Tony. It may hurt a bit, but it's all for the best
of the country. Better that nice, lumbering Mr Brown has the key to the
nation's piggy-bank in *his* weskit pocket rather than that ever-so slightly
    suspect, star-struck. hero-worshipping, willy-waving war-monger Mr Bliar.
What Tom Bower turns up on Brown is rather frightening, if/when he takes
over [and I reckon that Bliar has already thoroughly figured out how to
shaft Brown's chances when the time comes].

Admittedly the Bower book is something of a demonography, but that's
immensely useful as a contra-view of someone who is being presented to a
gullible public as a plaster saint. He appears to be an unprincipled,
innumerate, arrogant, back-stabbing, grasping, irascible, unhygienic,
self-centred, self-righteous shit. Ah, you will probably say, what would
you expect of a politician? Fair comment, but not all politicians have
sanitised their image as effectively as has Old Lockjaw, and the other side
of the coin is interesting to see. It's also a bloody good read, with
clear-eyed views of the whole bunch of them, especially the small gang of
sanctimonious porridge-wog carpet-baggers who now run the country.

  14. The bit I found disconcerting is where they interviewed Brown just after
he knew he'd won his seat. His faced kept switching from a demonic self
satisfied grin to the normal "I'm prudent Gordon" dour face. He seemed
to be utterly delighted that Labour were doing "badly" and that Tony's
days were numbered. Most worrying - while many people seem to hate Mr
Blair I get a real sense that the Tories would love to have Gordon Brown
as Labour Leader and PM. If you think the last campaign was negative
    wait till the next one.

Didn't see that bit but as you've mentioned Tony Benn I'd like to show
    off at this point.

Copy of "Diaries 1991 - 2001 Free at Last!" page 646 (hardback) entry for
13 Dec 01: I was one of the officials for both meetings and when
discussion moved on to make a very special evening. Bonus points for
witnessing Benn, gently, humiliate Glenda Jackson.

On the subject of New Labour twonks, they tend to get jittery in our (as
in Aslef) company. Fuckers don't do BBQs anymore...

You're not allowed to lie in bridge. Your bidding conventions must be
fully documented and available for the opposition to see. If you make a
bid which goes against the convention - a psyche[1] - the opposition are
entitled to object to the Director; if it even *looks* like your partner
understood what you mean you'll be penalised.

[1] The occasional psyche is OK, provided your partner is as completely in
the dark about it as your opponents.

I might have done. Then again, I might not. I'm not saying: *you're* the
one who claims I have. Do *you* know of anything I've done which might be
    considered even *slightly* dubious?
I don't think I can be a saint. Saintly, maybe.
