    hello all.
Got my P's/restricted licence or whatever it's called the other day. I did
an 8hr course with motorcycle motion. After both 4hr sessions I found it
difficult to ride my bike home because in the difference in handling between
    the dr200 and gpx250.

What I would like to do is practice slalom, e-stopping and counter-steering
on my bike but I'm too tight to pay $120 for a session with the instructors.

Is there anywhere I can go and put some cones out on the bitchy and
    practice?

    gavin.

    Local shopping centre car park?
    Nearest new suburb subdivision?
Dead end street in the local industrial area?

  3. At least if you drop the session bike while practicing some difficult
moves it's *their* bike, not yours. Cheap insurance for your $120, and you
    learn from someone.

Shopping centre car parks (find a quiet corner which isn't being used by
Learner car drivers) have plenty of white lines painted on the ground which
you can pretend are witches hats or cones. The white lines are usually pretty
well worn down from being constantly driven over so you don't have to worry
too much about losing traction on them.

You shouldn't worry about dropping the bike while practising emergency
braking. From the tuition I have seen the mistake most people make when
practising emergency braking is to not brake hard enough. As one HART
instructor told me, if you don't have a small wheel lockup just as you're
coming to a stop, your not braking as hard as you could have.

The best emergency braking practice I have done was on grass at HART. It's
quite good practice on how to recover from a front wheel lockup. Mind you we
were riding their bikes at the time, but noone in the group dropped the bike
they were using. The best real life practice I have had was when I
accidentally locked up the front wheel at 100kph on a freeway. Don't ****
around with your brakes when you're bored!

  5. As the others said, grab a car park, take some chalk, and if you're keen
then a tape measure and the printout from the RTA site on the P's test you
did... mark out the points and practise as per the test.

Make sure you're not making too much noise if you're in a built up area
otherwise 'they' should leave you alone.

also.. relax... and re-read the main points of your learning... and...
    relax :)

I recon I have the perfect place... coles head office carpark on the corner
of tooronga rd and toorak rd. Just thought someone might know of somewhere
better. Don't mind taking a long ride to get there. I'd just prefer to
    practice without an audience.

    thanks.

The car parks are deserted by about 6pm Mon Tues Wed and by 5:30pm Sat and Sun
and at this time of year that leaves you with a couple of hours of daylight.

they refuse to have daylight saving in Qld, so Clem and gNat have to be done
by 6pm, pitch black by then.

    X-No-archive: yes
In theory this is correct (and there's probably local shops where this is
true) but our local has a 9pm (weekdays) closing Woolworths, a Pizza-Hut
takeaway, DVD store and bottle-shop so there's guaranteed to always be
    someone getting in the way!
gNat's getting reasonably competent on the road now anyway so my whinging is
moot.... (and yes johnnie5; she even knows now to actually push the pedal IN
when you say "foot on the clutch/brake").

Kindly refrain from generating such images at a time when it is likely
to be lunchtime in the eastern colonies.

    Thank you
