What about something like jacket potato and coleslaw? Pretty standard fare.

And if you're going as far as making exceptions for yoghurt with curry
or chilli, you can include almost anything: horseradish sauce with beef,
mint sauce with lamb, even ketchup on your chips.

Aesthetics. Apparently I don't have an artistic bone in my body. Whereas
she is clearly the artist-queen of balloonville.
She came out with another absolute corker of a foible the other day but
I'm buggered if I can remember what it was. Made the 'hot with cold'
thing look like the pinnacle of rational thought. If I remember what it
    was, I'll report back.

Nope. And if, rarely, I get them together I gobble the salad and then
    eat lukewarm pasta.

More likely to be beans or sprouts, all things considered.

Actually, I quite like the Germanic idea of a cold salad starter,
especially from a buffet, as it gives you something to munch on when very
peckish. It worked quite well at the Enzian as it usually took at least
half an hour for the table of 12 to assemble so the main course could be
served. Greedy fuckers like me could get a second salad course in whilst
waiting for the final few :)
