.... if you turn it on in the US and find that the memory card contains
the maps for Austria and Switzerland.

Note to self - next time, make sure that the memory card's contents
actually matches the note on the card itself.

Oh, and the power of Google Maps and a regular road map conspired in me
finding what must be the only road in California that's labelled as a
'major road' that is *just* about wide enough to carry one car (for
those that have been in proper Northern California, it's the road
following the Salmon River from Somes Bar to Cecilville - stunning
scenery, but not something you want to drive in a hurry).

  2. I hadn't realised quite just how north California goes. I thought I'd
been quite north in Sacramento (and of course the nearby town of
Carmichael), but that seems to be only 2/3rds of the way up.

Yup, and the further north you go, the more beautiful it gets (if you
like mountains and trees, that is). Sacramento is still in the central
valley and that's *very* flat and *very* boring.

  4. Sounds like some of the roads on Skye - outside of the main road to
Portree the vast majority are single-car with passing places. And
driving the length of Skye after a big meal, in the dark and rain,
isn't to be recommended.. (it took a couple of hours for me to relax
afterwards - every time I closed my eyes all I could see was road..)
