  5. I've got a big tin of copper grease. I've had it about 25 years, and
it's maybe one-third used. I think it will see me out.

That's a new variation on 'the sands of time' !

I've a little pot of Copaslip, about 1/2 used, I hope it doesn't see
    me out ... :)

Heh, yes, I suppose so. I just bought a large tub of the stuff in the
mid-1980s (when I was stewarding various Moto Guzzis; need I say
more?) on the basis that: "Oh, this should last a while, and those
    damn tubes always get punctured...".

It's one of those things I am never, ever going to run out of. The
sort of garage equivalent of that bottle of oddly coloured Spanish
liqueur that everyone has at the back of the drinks cupboard. Another
is Loyblox (those rubberised polishing blocks): I got given a set, in
different grades, at about the same time and they never seem to wear
    out.

WD40, on the other hand: I never seem to have any in the garage when I
need it, despite buying the stuff all the damn time. And as sure as
eggs is eggs, every time I reach for the tube of gasket goo - any tube
of gasket goo - it's always solidified.

I buy it a gallon at a time. Costs less than 15 quid, comes with a
trigger spray bottle into which one decants the liquid, lasts for ages.
One gallon lasted me /and/ Loz over four years, for example.

Decided against WD40 last time, have Duck Oil this time - seems to be
more effective as a lubricant and most importantly, it smells better.
It may not be as effective as a penetrating oil, but I have a can of
    Prolong SPL 100:

    http://www.hansonoil.com/prolong-spl100-super-penetrating-lubricant-
    12oz-236ml-p-44.html

    - which , while it may sound like a cure for premature ejaculation (and
it may be, I've never had cause to try it) is far superior to WD40 in
the penetrating stakes and it has the bonus side-effect of decomposing
Loctite if left for ten minutes on a stubborn bolt thread. And it
    smells nice too.

The only downside of the Prolong spray is that it is rather expensive
(expensive enough, perhaps, to do what it claims on the tin) but that
means it is only brought into use when needed and only ever used with
the tube, never sprayed gaily around from an open nozzle. I use it in
preference to Copaslip in many places too, such as car wheel bolt
threads as it is less messy and doesn't attract every iota of grot for
miles around, as the coppery stuff tends to.
