To our local garden centre yesterday evening to get something really toxic
to put on the weeds that keep growing through the cracks on the terrace and
the gravel on the drive. Only to discover that they've gone all
environmental and don't sell toxic stuff any longer.

The alternative is a thing that warms up the little weedies with a gas
flame. The instructions explain how heating to between 75 and 90 degrees
does something to proteins, and there are some before and after pictures
with a dandelion looking a bit off colour.

Back home to try it out, and *it's a flamethrower*!! It makes a tremendous
roar, and it sets fire not only to weeds (I totally don't see how you can
just use it to warm them up a little) but also to garden furniture and my
    espadrilles. Complete win!

An easy and cheap way of nailing weeds in places like gravel and cracks
where nothing is supposed to be growing is, every time you make coffee or
the like, pour the surplus boiling water on a weed. This cooks the little
fuckers enough to kill them. One weed at a time, but effective, little
    effort, and no toxic shit.

I honestly don't know what this group is coming to. Last week people were
all "caravans are great", and now you're suggesting hot water as an
alternative to my new flamethrower. It's pathetic.

What's wrong with just angle-grinding them off at ground level, eh?

  8. Oh, ffs, hie thee doon to a farmers' supply store and get a litre of the
cheap analog of Monsanto's Roundup. It's much cheaper by the gallon, of
course, but a litre will rush you about a tenner. That litre will treat
hundreds of square metres of your palatial pocket hanky garden.

Anyway, flamethrower weeders are great fun, but **** all use in the long
    term.

That's more like it. I assume you mean with the flamethrower, rather than
    instead.

Does Roundup really do what it says on the tin (safe on contact with
    soil or whatever it is)?

I need to clear a large, what used to be a gravel, driveway. Had several
big fires on it last year but from the grass etc. that's grown back you
    would never know.

Not very far away downhill from said drive is a well that supplies
drinking water - my thought is that using Roundup or any other chemical
wouldn't be the best thing to do.

Yes. It breaks down into harmless stuff in the ground.
Should be fine, just don't overdo it & try to pick a day when it won't
rain for a few days. The grass will grow back though if you don't put
weed control fabric down, so if you're not using it as a drive, just
get the fabric & lay it on the grass. That'll kill it safely. When it's
dead, scrape the gravel to the side, put the fabric down properly, then
    sweep the gravel back over.

I bought something very toxic, well allegedly. After three doses since
last Friday the weeds appear to be thriving. I may need either a
    flamethrower or access to paraquat.

Actually, they're crap. I gave 17 quid for one and binned it. I went back to
"Roundup". A quick squirt and it's game over for the weeds and growy things.

Apparently so. I used Roundup to destroy *utterly* the Ivy that was killing
my shed. Not a single bit of it left after only one spraying and the grass
around the shed has sprung up like ****. In fact the grass has never been
    stronger.
Blather it with Roundup and have done.
Try it and let us know.

  18. Pretty much. I had to really go for it a couple of years ago with briars
and all sorts of shit, so I applied it at 5% instead of 2% and the grass
didn't come back for a while. Normal 2% is perfectly adequate and
    non-lethal to other stuff.
Just make sure, even with a small sprayer, that no overspray will land
on anything you want to keep, especially at higher concs. FBT,FDT.

There's an awful lot of missing the point going on here. *It's a
flamethrower!*. It's fine if the weeds come back, I can get it out again. I
want them to come back, I've already run out of things I can legitimately
    set fire to.

(I completely agree with all the comments about Roundup, by the way -
that's what I was looking for originally.)
