Someone {I forget who} posted a link tot he green echicle guide run by
DOTARS recently, and noted that it had no reference to motorcycles in
    it.

I sent them an email bitching about it, and just got their reply. I've
    included it below.

    G'day Darren

Thank you for your interest in the Green Vehicle Guide. I'm sorry that
the website did not include the information you were looking for.

Motorcycles are not included in the Guide because information on fuel
consumption and emissions performance is not available. This is because
Australian regulations do not require manufacturers to report this
information to demonstrate ADR compliance. Given this and the fact that
the number of motorcycles sold each year in Australia is relatively
small in comparison to light duty passenger and goods vehicles, there is
no intention to include motorcycles in the Guide in the near future.

    Regards
    GVG Team

So we're a minority - again - and are going to be ignored - again.

So much for far sighted government.

  2. Do you think it would be advantageous to be included?

I can't see how it would when 'cycles will be cf "light duty passenger"
    vehicles.

If the regulators realised how poorly motorcycles performed in fuel
consumption tests they'd probably ban them..

How do you know that they do? That dude from DOTARS reckons that there
isn't any data to measure this....

I recall reading an article about a test that they did in England. they
put a whole bunch of vehicles to the test which included least polluting
the one that came first was a truck, second was a Triumph motorcycle.

    I think I posted this before but I have gotten 31 k/l (3.36l/100k) when
I did my trip around Aust. (Had to do 90 kph to get that.) I normally get
about 4.66l/100k city riding. My engine capacity is 1340cc. Who says that
motorcycles are uneconomical. If they tested motorcycles to the AS that
they test the cars to I think that they will do better than most cars.

In F1 they restrict fuel to make them go further on less fuel. they do the
same on bikes. this then gets put into the road bikes. I think bikes have
always been at the forefront of technology in engine design for road use.

That's a bit hard to believe when the major motorcycle manufacturers
were about 15-20 years behind the car manufacturers in releasing major
models with fuel injection as standard equipment.

They're still lagging behind with auto gearboxes, too.

Different drivers if you'll excuse the pun.

Cars went to efi mostly for emissions and fuel economy reasons, neither
of which were huge issues for bikes.

Glad it was someone here. it woulda been seriously embarrassing if it
was on some mailing list or another instead of here. :)
    You're welcome.

My 2 stroke scooter - not exactly designed for fuel economy - gets about
17 km/l in the stop/go (where go="wring its neck") traffic, and
18/19km/l in the "rev it hard to get to 110kmh and keep it there in a
headwind" on the M2 and M4.

That's 5.88 l/100km at worst and 5.26 l/100km at best. Which is worse
than some cars, but pretty damn good in car terms.

I could post a pompous line like "if you read what I said not what you
    think I said..." but I won't.

I was asking how you, Nev.., know if bikes are poor fuel economy
performers. Not if DOTARS knows, which it clearly doesn't, as it said
that it doesn't have the data, in which case, this infers that no-one
    does....

Anyway, it's 6am, and I'm tired. Been a long night. Still gotta pack
before I head down the Island later today when I get up....

And don't forget airbags, climate control (especially when it's about to
rain and you've left the wet weather gear at home....)

THe "if" in your statement referred to the regulators realising, the
"they do" in Martin's referred to your claim that motorcycles perform
    poorly.

So, how do you know they do?
