Grrr. Bloody eBay bidders.

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by stephen.packer, Jun 6, 2010.

  1. So, I listed my K75 on eBay. High miles, short MOT, non-working
indicators and looks a general mess. Listing required a deposit of £50
within 48 hours of auction ending.

The auction 'winner' sent an email stating he'd collect on Sunday and
asking if I could fix the indicators. I sent a response saying I'd look
at them but no guarantees and requesting the deposit. He then replied
saying he wouldn't mess me about and would rather pay on collection.

Spent a couple of hours looking at the indicators today (it's the relay
box), called him (no answer) and sent an email stating I can't fix it.

His response... an email saying it's a shame the bike isn't roadworthy
and he didn't know if or when he could collect but it wouldn't be
    Sunday.

Have told him he has until midday to pay the deposit or I'm offering it
to one of the under-bidders. I don't think he's going to complete the
    auction. Grr.

Knew I should have been harder about the deposit.

In other news have collected an (old) YZ250 this evening. I'd forgotten
    what two-strokes were like. ring-a-ding-ding.

  6. Not that old. 1989 Water cooled. Can even start it now. Must take it
out in a field this afternoon.

It was only when I picked it up last night that my brother reminded me
    he used to race one.

Earlyish YPVS then. What's the knack of starting it? Mine can be a bit
temperamental when hot. Not too bad if on a stand or there is something
I can use to gain a bit of height advantage over it (it's lower than it
was now in hill climb mode, but still a bit high). Rather embarrassing
if proceedings are interrupted and I am required to fire it up again on
the start line, necessitating marshal intervention to help bump start
    the bugger.

  8. Cold; use the choke, like the vendor said not to.
Hot; turn over once, slowly, and then kick hard and give a *sniff* of
    throttle.

At least that's what I think.

Problem is I need to lean it against a wall from cold. Not so bad once
    hot.
I think I might try to get it to tick over. Know sweet FA about it but
presume it can be encouraged to do this.

Similar to mine, but it often won't fire unless the *sniff* is only
given at the end of a hard kick IYSWIM.
If it's like mine the throttle stop adjustment is done by turning the
knurled (pull up) choke knob on top of the carb. I also set the slow
running mixture screw to what the Clymer manual said the other day
rather than trying to do it 'by ear'. I won't be able to tell for sure
if that has helped until the next meeting though.

'84 models had YPVS and LC. Does it have those godawful Z-spoke wheels
or the anti-hop linkage from the back brake to the rear shock?
Sounds about right but I can't recall TBH; it's been a good year since
I last rode mine. If you drop it, be ready to try WOT early on if it's
    a pig to restart.
As in it needs to lean over to run?
They wil tick-over, possibly better than four strokes, it seems.

On my '98 one (Keihin carb) the knob that you pull up for the choke
doubles as the idle speed screw, like Peter's. I can't recall what was
    used on my '85 one.

  11. Er... don't think so. Look like standard spokes. And can't see any
obvious linkage from brake to shock.

Er... as in I can't hold it upright and kick it over since my legs
    aren't long enough.

Will refer to a workshop manual I think.

No, that's Bandits: natural attitude is horizontal.

Packer means he needs to climb on to the wall and drop off the top of
it onto the kickstart. He uses the wardrobe in the bedroom.

I was just curious as to how long Yamaha persisted with that folly.

I'm getting the knack of kick starting mine, mine's a 4T though, not a
2T. It helps using it daily so you get to know it in the cold, damp
    etc.

I agree with the kick over and give a breath of throttle, increasing
the handfuls as you get more tired.

You really need to listen to it. You can tell if it needs more, or
less gas, or if you've flooded it.

huh ? I just take mine off the (right hand) stand, kick the left hand
kicker. If it doesn't go after 5 kicks lean it back over and count to
    15. Then repeat :)

    In communiqué
Right hand kick start on mine. I used to usually start it while on the
left hand side stand when in enduro mode. Now I either lunge at it
whilst perched on a paddock stand, or I put one foot on the paddock
stand or anything else convenient like my trailer and kick away at it.
On its first outing at Hartland Quay I used the lean against a wall
technique at the bottom of the hill and gravity on the return. Margam
Park was the problem as it is a twisty sprint rather than a hill climb,
so coasting back down the hill and bumping it wasn't an option.

It's the repeating bit that becomes a tad wearying for an old gimmer.
