  1. I doubt anyone in the climate change argument is going to argue with
you that we have done through cycles (well some idiots might). But no
humans have gone through this sort of change with this amount of
population and this amount of infrastructure around. Ask some of the
Pacific islanders whether they want to see 1/2 metre rise. We've now
built up borders. Tuvalu is perfect example. 1000 years ago they would
have jumped in canoes and set up a village in New Zealand. What
happens when their country goes underwater? OK, only a small
population, but they are going to be the start of it if predictions
are correct. And that could happen in the next 10-20 years.
Absolutely. Haven't been there for years but it has such a range of
scenery. It's fucking awesome. If I could find a job in New Zulland
I'd be there in a shot as I don't need a visa to work there. Unlike
that bloody country that claims to have a Queen of our country. Can't
recall its name at the moment. It'll come to me tomorrow I'm sure.

I rather meant we expect you to discover something rather fundemental and
unexpected that will switch all the lights on, forever.

Have you managed to explain gravity yet?

If some catastrophe was to wipe out half of the undeveloped world's
population that wouldn't exactly be a bad thing in macro environmental
    terms.

Also, and this confuses me, why isn't the Environmental/CO2 lobby clamouring
to have large parts of the world reforested? In 30 years we could replant
and grow tens or hundreds of thousands of square miles. It would provide
good unskilled and semi skilled employment and be spread around the world.
Scotland alone could do with 25% of the landmass being replanted.

Other than they would rather rattle on about robbing you of your cars and
    aviation.

  5. True, but I often wonder what happened to and what happened with, be it
on a different scale, the societies that existed 4,000 10,000 75,000 etc
years ago when things like Santorini went up. Or Toba where
palaeontologists now believe there were pockets of advanced (relatively
    speaking) humans.

If those events had not happened would we be 4,000 years ahead
technically, than we are now. Now there's a thought.
    Warp drive.
    Gravity control.
   )>
I think the world should help them out not like when we evacuated
thousands to let off some H Bombs and told them to stop griping.
And they did it without GPS or it is believed even a compass. Just
stellar navigation done by the naked eye. An incredible achievement.
    See above.
The New Zealand highway agency have a system to tell you when some
fantastic scenery is about to appear.

    "WARNING ACCIDENT AREA AHEAD"

You drive around the corner and go
    "WOW look at that"
    followed by
    "OH SH*T"
as you all but drive off of the road because you are looking at the
    scenery.
Please, PLEASE, Pretty Please if you go, will you sponsor me.

I would love to emigrate there, but as I am older than 56 they wont have
me without a sponsor or millions of NZD to invest.

    Yes mutter mutter.......................................

  6. Got this thread has drifts . . .

Had an amazing dive of the East Coast of Tasmania on a wreck 2 decades
ago. Oh, hang on, 3 decades ago. 43m metres. Deco on the way back up
had a white pointer off in the distance. Not sure how big as water
clarity was 40m+. ie we could see the wreck as we dropped into the
water. I though "That's not that deep and that ship isn't that big!"
but the vis was that good it was easy to see and of course once we got
down there it was quite a large steamer that went down in the early
1900s. Our bottom time was only something like 15 minutes, maybe less.
We had tanks hanging on lines from the boat to deco as we came up.
From memory about half an hour at 10m.

So watching this bloody big fish while 3 of us are hanging off a line
looking like bait off a fishing line. I'm thinking "Bends, shark,
bends, shark?" Eeny meeny miney mo. Just kept watching the shark. I'd
guess it was about 20ft long but hard to judge. Thankfully we didn't
look biteable as a hyperbaric chamber was a good 4 hours away.

Shirly you can retire there as long as you can support yourself and don't
    want to work?

  9. I can support myself and have private medical insurance but I come from
    the UK so NO.

It's all down to Maggy T and agreeing with the EU to stop automatic
right of abode in the UK for Ozies and Kiwis. They in turn said up yours
you can't come to our country then.

Sometimes troo, but down here, 1 of the best wreck dives is at 40m[1]. I
only ever did it in the summer though.

[1] Actually a friend of mine who's into tri-mix says the best ones are at
    50+m.

  13. Off of the Norfolk coast there are about 400 wrecks plotted with in easy
reach with a RIB and most of them are less than 30 meters and a lot
    about 20 meters.

Good books use are by 'Ayer Tikus'.
I normally dive on Nitrox and keep it above 35 meters.

There are rumours NITROX has the same effect as VIAGRA.

FWIW Oldbury and Wylfa are still listed as running.
Both are due for decommissioning soon AFAIK.
    http://www.nda.gov.uk/news/oldbury-full-power.cfm

ISTR there was a big fuss last year about Wylfa and they were trying
to keep it running until the planned replacement because jobs on
Anglesea depend on a smelting works (?) which depends on Wylfa for power.
http://www.nda.gov.uk/news/wylfa.cfm Says it will now close in December 2010.

  15. I heard it could have been as low as 1,000 due to the world wide effect
on the climate. A mate of mine is into that sort of thing and did his
degree in it. He can go on for ages at the pub if you ask him a
    question!

They were hunter gatherers with a loose form of society.
    Or so their remains indicate.
Now how about the *new* theories.

    It's in Bolivia:

But NZ will have a general entry retirement policy. The Philippines is
simply opening a bank account and depositing 50k USD which must lie for a
    year.

I think it's a rule, the best ones are *always* slightly out of reach,
either beyond qualification or comfort or both.

  18. Only if sponsored by close relatives.

I keep trying to get my kids to move out there. Even then they can't
    sponsor me for 3 years.
Now could I move to the Philippines become a resident and move from
    there?

  20. Agreed, but no-one gets to choose. You want to volunteer?

Jeezuz. I've been along the Scottish border and you should see the
decimation [1] of the natural flora down here. Scotlandt looks lush.
Maybe it's worse further into Scotland but I didn't get a good look.
But this wonderful land of Oz has been caned.Considering the size of
this continent compared to your pissy little island, we are fucking
things over far worse per capita. Plant all the trees here. We've got
a tad more room than you guys. I believe it doesn't matter where said
carbon soaks are and we have a shitload of land.

Now you are getting silly. What's wrong with a 1960s VW campervan?
    Come on!

    Kev

[1] and I'm using the current version of the word, not the original.
    90% gone, not 10%.
