A moment of excitement followed by hours of boredom, followed by another moment of excitement. Quite the opposite of bike riding. -- Beav VN 750 Zed 1000 OMF# 19
Check out "Nitro Circus" on TV[1]. One of the crew gets to ride with Kirkby Chamblis while he rags the bollocks out of his Extra 300. [1] one of the MTV channels -- Beav VN 750 Zed 1000 OMF# 19
I've been indisposed today so I see you've already had a lot of comment and as you can tell a lot of the UKRM regulars mileage varies. It's a high volume (though nowhere near its peak) group, read by busy people (apart from those slacking off at work of course) and it is really appreciated when some care is taken over format, making it easier to read. Usenet is a dying medium and sloppy posting hastens its end. I also use agent and scrolling through a large screed of text when I'm trying to do a quick catch up (I'm constantly 1500 odd behind it seems) gets really irritating, really quickly. You happened to catch my polite reminder, but Nige, Beav and Catman have all had similar comments. It's about having a little bit of thought for the other people you are interacting with. It may well hark back to the old limited bandwidth days, but what it has become is a set of cultural norms within the group. When you deliberately set out to do something that a number of people have told you is not appreciated it makes you come across as selfish and rude. Now I'm sure you're not those things, but that's the impression given. So, is taking a couple of seconds to make neat posts really that anathema to you?
Not really, I will snip if it is silly. But is it an anathema to you to not snip and save me the time of going back and searching to find what the original thread was about? It works both ways. Just because it is a protocol does not mean it is right. It works for some, and not for others. Sorry if it annoys you, that is not my intention. But I prefer the other direction unless of course if thread drifts to insane lengths, as this thread has done. I certainly would not leave 300+ posts in a thread. But if it is relevant to the discussion I am posting then I'll leave it there and would prefer other people to do so as well. You name 3 people who post in here constantly. They are up on all the threads and don't need reminding what the discussion was about. There are other people reading as well.
It was ridiculous in the post that started this. Be thankful it was me being polite and not one of the other snip scions wading in. If it leaves pages of attributions and unrelated text, yes. It does, but the majority view here (and I saw what you did ogden) is that the reading is easier if posts are in a neat format. But it is what is considered polite and considerate here. But you added 'moi?' to a bit of the thread that only needed the paragraph above it for context. At that point it didn't matter what the original thread was about, it was a sub thread, a new conversation. There was no need to leave the rest in as it provided no context to the bit you were replying to. So snip the discussion that has passed. 'Think of the lurkers'. UKRM is a sod to keep up with. Some people here make it worth the effort.
Fair enough. I read things differently. Who is wrong and who decides who is wrong? I've got thick skin. Again, I apologise if you don't like it, but you can skip my posts if you want. The same way I skip posts on forums that I can see coming from someone who I know is most likely posting bullshit. It's called free speech and I'm afraid I will not be dictated to as to how and where I do it. If you think that is wrong, I respect your right to tell me to **** off. But it won't change the way I do things. I'd prefer to see people leave the context of a thread in there. You obviously don't. There's no real resolution to that apart from guns at dawn
But that's where I am coming from. If you are only an occasional reader in here, it is easier if the context of the post is in one message. I don't get why this is such an issue. If everyone here is offended by that reasoning, I will stop doing it, but I have to say I cannot fathom the logic.
Yes, it is possible. If the BCD doesn't have enough air then you'll sink until you put more air in. I thought you'd know this already.
There are loads of boring dives. But. OK some are a bit touristy: Zabargad south of Hamata. (Outstanding sea and coral sites, caves and tunnels. Fish etc., have to move out the way for you.) Thistlegorm. (You have dive it once) The Cenotes. (100 meter vis) Akumal and Tulun (why swim with 10 dolphin when you can swim with 10 whale sharks) Coast of Kenya and Tanzania. (More mantas than you can shake a stick at) And one of my favourites the wrecks in the North Sea. (When the vis is acceptable) Nothing boring about that lot and you don't need to be an advanced diver to do them.
Mistake? Yes. Sometimes it happens to the pros too. I recall a British diver called Rob Palmer, who was fairly well known for some reason, died out the Red Sea. As I recall he got into the water, dived down and didn't stop.
Best dived from a liveaboard when the day boats have gone and even better as a night dive. Still personally prefer the Rosalie Moller, had a great dive with the eldest sprog on that, just us and a couple of guys on breathers. Of course we then had 25 minutes of stops but it was worth it. Want to see whale sharks sometime, saw basking sharks off Cornwall last year http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphoto...1185231191856_1260540873_491234_1149153_n.jpg http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphoto...1185231231857_1260540873_491235_7544393_n.jpg
Wouldn't know. The one and only time I tried diving, I had a claustrophobia induced panic attack and had to surface fairly sharpish. Diving doesn't appear to agree with me.
