Last I read, and the situation may have improved, they had one of three
runways working but no radar so pilots were landing through the night on
visual. Nuff respect if it's true.

They also had no lifting gear intact at the airport, so even once planes
had landed they had no easy way of unloading - exception was military
transporters but they mostly seem kinda busy carrying shit to squaddies
    in the middle east.

Then there's the sea ports - many planes have been turned back, unable
to land, so the aid agencies have loaded stuff on boats to take to the
island. Easy to get there, almost impossible to unload due to the damage
    to port infrastructure.

Also saw a photo earlier of a BA plane being used for scheduled flights
to the Dominican Republic with half the seats ripped out of economy to
make room for aid. Gets things to the right land-mass, but still leaves
the last mile or hundred, as you say.

    Sounds pretty fucking horrible.

  4. I bet there are ecomentalists out there intent on convincing people
the earthquake was linked to Climate Change(tm), previously marketed
    as Global Warming(tm).

On that note, has anyone else seen the ad doing the rounds at the
moment that really smacks of propoganda:

  5. What's your issue with this advert, is it that you don't accept a link
    between CO2 and climate change?

Or is it the 'think of the children' approach?

YTC - ads are by definition a form of propaganda.

Personally I think this one is a good one.

  7. It's the shaming, dogmatic feel of it.

And shirley if only 40% is due to everyday stuff, why not mention
where the other 60% is from?

It's all short-term carbon cycle, though. I doubt any of the people
killed are several million years old.

It seems to me that too many people confuse two completely separate
issues - the speed with which the world is warming as a result of the
natural cycle of events on the one hand, and the extent to which
mankind is affecting both the speed and the final outcome of the cycle
on the other. Both are carelessly described as Climate Change and
    Global Warming.

And seeing as CO2 accounts for less than 0.04% of the atmosphere, forgive me
if I don't give a shit how much my bikes/cars chuck out.

And there are studies that say the earth is actually cooling down and
there's no evidence of any temperature rise over the last 100 years.

  18. If you take into account the 25 'major' volcanos erupting at any one
time[1], the off gassing of carbon dioxide rich submerged strata as they
decrease in depth[2] plus the off gassing of permafrost areas[3], humans
probably account for less than 10%[4] of green house gasses.

And I left out all the cattle farting!

Popocatepetl having a bad day puts North America's contribution to the
    problem in the shade.[5].

    [Disclaimer:

1/ There may not be 25 volcanos erupting at any one time.

2/ The amount of CO2 given off is huge but the writer does not know the
exact amount and will not be drawn into 6 form debating methods of "Show
    me where that's written down."

3/ Same goes for permafrost. See 2.

4/ 10% is a guess I'm not getting into the "48% is not 50% so you are
    wrong" thing.

5/ Popocatepetl (or Montserrat for that matter ) add other green house
    gasses See 2.

OK so I've been watched a couple of episodes of 'Grumpy old men'.
