IIRC the anomalous expansion of water. Why pond life continues to
exist when the surface is frozen.

I thought that too, but ITYF it's a bit more complex than what we (or at
    least I) was taught.

I was given a T-shirt with effectively that[1] on it. Not really
    desperately funny, I felt.

  8. Fairy nuff. As I said I was just going on my dive training memory from
the 80s when we were told 4C was a cold as you could get. It's stuck
    in my head since.

Folks I know have been ice diving, something I fancy sometime and I am
pretty sure the water temp just under the ice is -1c. This is the kind
of diving where you take a chainsaw to cut the hole & stirrers to stop
    it refreezing.

I tried around a month ago surfing near Croyde in Devon using my 5mm
wetsuit. I lasted about 15 minutes although several people were in for
    an hour or so.

  12. Interesting. As I said before the 4C thing has stuck in my head for
over 25 years now. And about a decade ago a mate went diving in
Antartica. He said something diving in 0C and I told him the 4C story.
He did go down there and dived through holes in the ice withe leopard
seals (lucky bastard - got another mate about to leave for a year down
at Mawson too, I'd love to get down there) and he confirmed the 4C
thing. So I'm buggered if I know now. There certainly is shit going on
at 4C but from what you guys have shown me, obviously at can go below
    4C.

    You've destroyed 30 years of dreams :)

It was fine, of course being a weekday there were only at most 1/2 a
    dozen there.
Sounds like Wraysbury, now that is shite viz from the silt bottom.
Come within 3 metres of it and it stirs.
Search their website and you'll probably still find a picture of me
somewhere. Suit is back with Dennis at the moment for new boots[1] and
a pee valve. Should be finished by the time I get back home.

It was much better. So much so that I ordered some, I expect to
getting into will take a bit of practice. Seemed a bit clumsier to
start with but after 20 mins still felt the same, whereas my 5mm wet I
    was losing feeling by then.
Usually do the return to shore if off a Rhib. Generally don't catch 2
slacks in a day son #2 is usually a drift. Look like I'll be mainly
doing HB this year. Just sent of £400 and that's only the deposit
cheques, and a;ready booked and paid in full for others.

[1] Found a split on day1, aquasure and gaffa tape worked fine as a
temporary repair. I've gone up to size 11 so I can get more socks on.
