So that he could sit in the cockpit doing forward thrust and going
    down with sympathy. Why else?

  3. I was once asked to re-send the contents of my backpack through
the Heathrow scanner in smaller batches because it was "too busy" -- I had
a laptop, external HDD, PDA, at least three power supplies, 2x EU->UK
power adaptors, a French extension lead, etc., etc... Basically my entire
    working environment.
I've had to do it at Heathrow once.

It shirly is! No wonder the Yanks had so many UFO sightings.

I don't know what the high point of the visit was, it's hard to rate so
many interesting items. The IMAX Mars film is amazing. Seeing a genuine
Nazi V2 was pretty staggering but the Apollo 16 re-entry capsule
    probably gets my vote.

I discovered my friends Dad, whom we stayed with, worked as an
electrical engineer for NASA inception in Apollo, Skylab, Star Wars
Laser (failed) development, the whole shooting match. It made for lots
of interesting stories but they pale against his account of greeting Von
Braun and the other German scientists and working for them for several
years. From their open relief at having escaped the hangman's noose (for
the use of slave labour etc) to their 1st hand account of Germany's
slide after Hitler was voted in and the Gestapo took control of the
    population.
His telling of Von Braun debunked the adverse character reports some
media have promoted, not at all aloof or foppish and a hands on
    technical genius.

  5. My understanding is that most of them are considered de-commissioned
    now.
