Heh, I've just received an email from the travel coordinator in the UK.
Only critical travel to/from the UK should be undertaken.

Lol. I must admit I did check that I hadn't accidentally
increased the font size in my browser when it came up!

It's already strict enough in the UK regarding security controls.

We're just being advised of delays - no announcements yet about
cancelling travel. I'm having doubts as to whether our two-day meeting
next week will take place, with four of us from Basel, five from the
US and one from Australia having to travel to the UK for it.

I bet the **** started the whole thing off just so he could get it
    cancelled.

I've never said that. 'sides, this has nothing to do with a nanny state.
Depends if you cut out the middle or not.

Seriously though, the technology already exists to detect explosives
and other potentially dangerous devices. It's not the fault of the
traveller if security can't use it properly.

Seems like they're talking about some liquids which could, presumably,
be mixed to form an explosive once on board. Maybe they're as yet
unable to detect raw components in this form?

If that's the case, then ban liquids. I'm sure that most modern colour
x-ray machines can detect liquids. Aren't the x-ray machines showing
images in real time or are they snapshots?

  12. All that extra stress from being a dad; lack of sleep, worrying about
    the future, etc?

Serves you right for breeding. :)

  13. Iirc, PikeyAir had started charging extra for hand baggage over a
certain limit. None at all means no extra revenue.

Apparently some chap at Scotland Yard lurked UKRM and got slightly
confused with TOG's plans of intercontinental booze smuggling...

Realtime, yes[1], but I don't know enough about them to say whether
    they can distinguish or not.

[1] Travelling as much as you do, haven't you watched them?

I have and I believe that they are real time, but IANAE, so I couldn't
    confirm.

But I do believe that if they are real time, then liquids will be
easily spotted. Contrary to my earlier belief that PE couldn't be
hidden in shoes, I've been told my one of my customers (works for Air
France) that stuff hidden in shoes *can* be detected, as the density of
the heel isn't uniform. Colour x-ray machines are easier in detecting
    different density levels.

    This is amusing:

I'd gladly lose a plane full of citizens a week, to have pre 9/11
security. [1] A nicer, friendlier population control if you will.
And, it's not like any particular plane load has that many important
types on it in the first place.. again, losing them possibly not such a
    big deal.

I'll note for the record I don't fly often, although others of
    importance to me do.

[1] Under the assumption that eventually, planes would stop being blown
    up 'cause it's ineffective!
