You aren't going to kill 300-400 people with a single bomb on a train,
though. Trains are remarkably crash-resistant (isn't that right, Paul &
Sweller?). Even a really bad train crash is pretty survivable. Airliner
    crashes aren't.

'specially Eurostar trains. They're tough cookies to de-rail. Even at
    300kph

Can't you just buy a book after you check in and go through security
in the massive area known as The Shops?

    Indeed.

The last three flights I've taken, I've been taken to one side at
security and had to empty my bag, demonstrating that my laptop, sat-nav,
camera, 2 x mobile phones, PDA and iPod are all working devices and not
    bombs.

At Guernsey airport, they wouldn't let me *into* the 'country' until
they were satisfied that my business card was genuine and that I really
was working for a coffee company and not an international terrorist /
    drug smuggler.

It's a complete waste of time and resources - not only for the airport
staff, but also for the travellers - I quite often use the airport WiFi
to catch up on emails etc. whilst waiting for my plane.

"It's not a matter of whether the war is not real, or if it is,
Victory is not possible. The war is not meant to be won, it is meant
to be continuous. Hierarchical society is only possible on the basis
of poverty and ignorance. This new version is the past and no
different past can ever have existed. In principle the war effort is
always planned to keep society on the brink of starvation. The war is
waged by the ruling group against its own subjects and its object is
not the victory over either Eurasia or East Asia but to keep the very
structure of society intact." George Orwell Nineteen Eighty-Four

Yes you can if they sell anything you want to read , but when people already
have many fine books it's daft not to let them read them

  13. It all depends - if you timed it right with sufficient suicide bombers
you could potentially take out hundreds of people. You could do this
with a mix of bombers on trains and in a station.

With the bomb at Edgware Road there was an initial concern that the bomb
had destabilised the tunnel roof and that Marks and Spencers on Edgware
Rd would fall in on top of the train. If the shop went it was possible
that adjacent buildings and the Marylebone Flyover and subway complex
might go too. Pure conspiracy theory - I wonder which police station is
    very close to this location?

You do not need to be too intelligent to think of a number of places
where you could happily wreck the tube or railway system and take some
rather interesting buildings with you. Might need a lot of bombers but
there were plenty involved for 9/11 and apparently here as well.

    Solution: Don't ever fly anywhere.

  15. Oh indeed - the latest way to play "spot the tourist" is to look for
anyone with eyes like saucers if a police car happens to hurtle up
Charing Cross Road with the "blues and twos" going.

On a more parochial note I saw a policeman standing guard outside a
house around the corner this morning as I got the bus to work. I assumed
that must have been a location for a raid - it would seem I was correct
as arrests were made in Walthamstow. Police cars screaming around the
place, police still there tonight, "interested" passers by milling
about. "Yawn" - that god it wasn't my street.
Yes but having touched them once that was enough. The repeated threats
and scares are enough to keep everyone "on their toes" - whether you are
Blair, Bush or Osama Bin Lid.

I'd imagine a bomb going off in the front carriage of a train at 100mph
would derail all the subsequent carriages and potentially kill a couple of
hundred and also wreck the track for a few weeks.

No security on the trains so accomplishing it would be dead easy.

Not as glamorous as planes but just as effective

  18. They had a bomb go off on the TGV and it didn't kill many people.

Why bother putting the bomb on the train? Put it on the tracks.
    They're totally unguarded.
