However a derailed HST did kill a fair few people in Berkshire a year
    or so ago.

Okay, some of that came down to unfortunate track design (the
points/siding I believe are what fully derailed the engine rather than
the car) but it shows what could happen if something was 'done' to the
    tracks themselves.

The crash at Potters bar is another on that springs to mind to show how
damaging something as simple as a derailment can become.

Depends on the track and train frequency. - the drivers tend to be very
    observant.

However the opportunity is definitely there I would agree.

How would they spot your mouth wash wasn't mouthwash via X-ray as a
    matter of interest?

And that the mobile phone you happened to pack in your bag was actually
a mobile phone as opposed to something else?

Aircraft make the best targets because any kind of incident is
pretty much unsurviveable. You also get the added bonus of
killing people on the ground from the falling wreckage which
could kill more people than in the 'plane itself - depending on
where it happens. Lockerbie is an example where 259 were
killed on the 'plane and 11 on the ground - not a huge amount
but still quite high for a remote area of Scotland.

There's not far to fall from a train, and derailments are usually
horizontal travel and a carriage can quite effectively contain
    the passengers.

A bomb on a ship will see it sink eventually, but you'd have a
very high survival rate with all the liferafts and so on at hand,
    especially after disasters like Zeebrugge.

Osama had tried to destroy the WTC before with a car bomb
in the underground parking lot, but got no further than making
    a big(ger) hole.

I guess that the tactic is to maximise the damage from the
smallest possible devices, because these are easier to
conceal. You don't need a very big hole in the side of a
'plane to really **** it up.

Plastic explosive under each rail running a good 50 metres with a
remote trigger. I'd like to see a driver spot that at 100mph.

    Okay, I'll bite again.

    It's not a country Steve. It's a crown dependency.

    Have a read of :
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_dependency
    and
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guernsey

At the very least it might mean you spout just a little less bollocks
    about it.

I'm not holding my breath though.
Guernsey has a worry about drug markets and the severe effect a rise in
drugs would have on it. Therefore they are VERY harsh on drug related
    issues. Sentences are severe.

You *seem* to have very little understanding of your target audience,
their market, their traditions, differences and so forth. Is that
really the case or just the way it comes across on here?

Hence using the inverted commas around country.
I posted my opinions on the Channel Islands.

Watching Big Brother provides more entertainment than a night out in St.
    Peter Port.
So, you reckon I look like a drug courier / dealer, then?
Eh? Wtf are you wibbling on about now?

    For you.
I wouldn't know how you look recently. However if you are stopped as
often as you say, then something is perhaps amiss somewhere?
Hmm. Somethig similar to what you said to BGN ^^ up there- An
impression made from the comments you've posted on the subject.

  13. They (the terrorists) only had to kill Americans on their home turf
once. They've not had to do it since because a combination of "fright"
tactics from our dear leaders plus occasional threats from Osama himself
have helped keep much of America suitably "scared". The terror has been
established and the Americans are, I think, incapable of shrugging and
saying "you can't even touch us". Not disagreeing with your sentiment -
it's just that they've lost the opportunity.

I think us Brits are a bit [1] better (and more experienced) at being
suitably stoical and just getting back on track with things - this is
evident from how usage of the tube has resumed its growth over the year
    after the 7/7 bombings.

[1] only a bit though as I sense we are all swallowing the paranoia,
fear and required subservience that is so evident in American opinion
given we have "a war on terror".

For the residents, too, judging by how dead it is.
The only thing I can think of is that I carry a fair number of gadgets
which trigger a search when shown up on x-ray.

That, of course, doesn't explain why Guernsey police stopped me on the
    way in.
No, that's a whoosh. I still have no idea what you're getting at.

Yeahbut the design of the TGV makes it very safe and derailments are
nowhere near as serious as UK HSTs.

It's all to do with the bogies design, y'see. On English trains, there
are bogies under the carriages. On the TGV's, the bogies are between
the carriages, thereby making the train like a very long safe snake.
Twist one end and the rest of the train resists turning over too.

There have been a few incidents over the past few years demonstrating
    the safety of TGV's.

  16. This might work if you remain in the vicinity to trigger the explosion
when a train is coming. If you just leave a bomb to explode then the
explosion will break the signalling circuits tripping signals to red.
Similarly if you damage electrical traction supply - this is monitored
and someone will see there is a problem. You may not get any crash at
    all.
