Coming back from Wiltshire today came across a Hornet rider with a strange
overtaking routine. He would pass a car, pull into the gap in front of it
and then point his left arm down at 45 degrees almost like a slow down or
hazard gesture but without the relevant hand movement. Wtf is that all
about? Quite annoying 'cos he was only passing one car at a time and
    gesticulating *every* time.

  2. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Rick
Hornet rider? He's just going for the reserve switch, "just in case".

At a guess thanking the overtaken driver for letting him in?

  4. Something similar is pretty common in France; typically cars will move
over to make it easier for a bike to get past between opposing streams
of traffic, and the rider will in return waggle his right leg to say
thanks. Since French bikers tend to wave at each other with their left
hands when they pass going in opposite directions, this can lead to
odd-looking left-arm, right-leg combinations when overtaking and passing
an oncoming bike at the same time.

Umm, they can't easily take the right hand off the 'bars to wave thanks?

Car drivers over here tend to be much more aware of bikes, and if they
make a special effort to let you pass or even just acknowledge your
presence they appreciate a nice friendly gesture of thanks.
    Hah.

Not really - it was quite an aggressive gesture. If anything it seemed to
    intimidate one or two drivers.

Probably an ANL ani-Fascist salute. TBH if I saw someone doing that, I'd
follow him and study his habits.

Yeah. Imagine how unnerving it would be to be cruising up the road,
performing a series of crypto-Aryan overtakes, and being unobtrusively
shadowed by a scruffy grey Fuglypla.

With the driver dressed in a safari jacket and whispering into a micropone.

It needs to be done, just to see the reaction of the followed one.
