The sort that lets you get all that nice, fresh oil reaching the parts
it needs to after a filter change before starting the engine. Many
Italian thoroughbreds of the 90's - et Voxan (well up to 2003)
    naturellement!

Definitely not. No Kawasaki I've ever ridden has spun the starter
    with the kill switch off.
Yes, 70s (and maybe 80s) Hondas used to do it.

    4ax.com:

Unknown to me, my 93 Honda Dominator did it. I must've knocked it off when
washing the bike. Took a while to discover why the bike wouldn't start...

    The GS500 also does that.
Cue much cussing and general anger until realisation dawns.
It took several incidents to train me into the habit of checking the
kill switch as part of every start.

    thanks for the suggestions.
I'll go have have a look at the Triumph forums the other chap mentioned. I
had loads of trouble with my 1976 T140, and bought that new, I was warned
not to buy this new stile bonneville, but I knew best.... I wan't another
Guzzi now I would like a bit of a ride out next summer!!! I have a Honda 90
step through 70k on clock and its never, no not ever, let me down....

Was this the lurid green one that was advertised a while ago with low
mileage due to an intermittent electrical fault ?

Quite liked the look of it.

Well I had the centre coil go on my 955i Sprint ST, which is
essentially the same engine, AFAIUI, and I _never_ used the kill
    switch.

So the correlation is looking a little weak, on that sample.

IME plug top coils are feckin unreliable beasts, including on certain
    upmarket cages

It's not the same as the T4s, which were 885 carb engines. Might be the
same as the Bonneville but I know nowt about them.

I use the switch for one simple reason. If I have to remove the key, I've
got to switch it off anyway, so why do two tihngs when one will do enough?

Economy of movement. Coz I'm a lazy ****.

And that doesn't work on most new bikes now. The fuel is cut off by the kill
switch along with the spark so there's no build up of unburnt juice
    collecting in the pipes/cans.

    Fucking spoilsports.

Neighbour has had 2 replacement coil packs on his Agila.
The AA bloke said they are a very common fault.

Don't thinks so. It is (or was) a fairly lurid green but not the more
common colour scheme with matched tail, tank and mudguard: this one
has graphite tail & mudguard. I was a bit concerned at first: I
thought that maybe the plastics had been replaced with mismatchd ones,
but Google reveals that Guzzi did sometimes do V11s with the tank one
colour and the rest in another.

Intermittent faults on these are often down to the relays - it's a
known fault. My other Guzzi uses different pattern relays but they
suffer the same problem and need the contacts cleaning every couple of
    years.

I found that the clutch switch and/or its wiring is a weak point as
well: I've simply shorted it out for now.
Opinions seem to be mixed: some like them, some think tthey're ugly.
    They're certaInly characterful.

I sat on one several years ago and I've wanted one for some time. The
one I've bought is extremely rough in comparison, but it was
/relatively/ cheap. I suspect not in any way a bargain though.

Yes, relays are the usual suspects.
My 1999 V11Sport used el cheapo Siemens relays that were a real PITA.
Once replaced with OMROMS, no more problem to start.
Do the same to the sidestand switch (plug is under the tank, left side).

You should verify the side brackets of the oil cooler, the 1999/2000
models were in shit alloy that breaks due to the vibrations, replaced
    since 2001/2002 with steel.
