Hard disc down

Disc in one of my NAS devices appears to have died of sorts. It spins
up OK but the heads (I think) are making hell of a noise when the disc
is being accessed and the NAS can't see it.

Problem is, it's a SATA disc and I've no other device that can take SATA
discs, so I can't put it into the PC and run some diags.

Any tips? Should I just get a SATA PCI card and bung the thing into my PC?

Buy a new SATA disk, put it in the NAS device and restore from the backup
    you have made.

Get one of those usb -> sata/IDE adapter thingies. Much cheapness from
ebay, and a useful thing to have lying around. Mine's in use right now.

    :p

I've not had an IDE disc fail and I've owned loads. Out of the 1 SATA
discs I've had, it has now failed. Ergo, I should stick with what I've got.

    What he said.

However, if you did decide to learn the hard way on that one, this

Ah, the old backup taunt eh ;) In this case, it's not a problem as it
is my backup device. However there are files on there I'd rather delete
before I send it away for warranty replacement.

You could always try to give it either a quick sharp slap (palm to the
disk) or try freezing it overnight (in two sealed plastic bags) and
then plugging it in, to get your data back.

The slap method worked for me once, main moons ago and I've "heard"
that freezing does sometimes help [1].

[1] But it didn't work for me recently [2]. I need to figure out
    another way of sorting it.
[2] For a mate. Honest guv.

    The disk is probably FUBARed.
I got a USB SATA caddy from Novatech for about £18. Works fine.

That looks great. I've got a Team Xecuter X360USB USB to sata adapter
but still need to faff around with power for the drive.

Not sure the diagnostics for the sata drive would work through the USB
adapter. Was unable to diagnose a faulty drive I had with my one. Mind
you, even the onboard sata controller on my server didn't work with that
    drive.

Seems to be worried that some confidential stuff might still be
accessible on the drive if he takes it back under warranty. Time to get
    the grinder out I think.

    Exactly!

Seriously though, a new PC is on the cards at some point, but I can't be
arsed at the moment as I don't really use it that much these days. The
    laptop gets used more.

Indeed. OTOH that disc is clearly fucked. Restore from backup.

    Ohhh useful. Ordered.
The heads sound like a machine gun, obviously just a bit quieter. I've
managed to get it running briefly. Soon as I plugged it in to the
laptop, Linux alerted me that it was about to fail. Managed to wipe
some stuff, but other files it wasn't playing ball on. Diags failed at
    first attempt. Clak-clak-clak-clak-clak-clak.

Always a sod not being able to sterilise. OTOH it *REALLY UNLIKELY* that
anyone else is going to give a toss about getting your data of a broken
disc on the off chance that it's of interest when they probably have a
stack feet high of working ones.

Take a 4 inch nail, put the pointy bit on the top cover of the drive
and whack with a hammer, listen to the delicate sound of smashing
platters. Shake and repeat until a sufficient level of granularity
    replaces paranoia.

    Easy.

Bit hard when it's going back for a warranty claim, though....

    ...
Degauss it? AC buzzbox welder, wrap the electrode lead around the disc a few
times, short electrode to work clamp for a few seconds at max current....
Case might get a bit warm though.

Though some of us have access to the real thing, of course. For MoD values
of sterilise, it's degauss - hammer flat - chopsaw - furnace....
