I can't see why mentioning someone's ethnicity is sometimes jumped on as
conclusive proof that the mentioner is racist.

To me, reading, it simply gives me a convenient hook to hang some context
on.

Yes, it means I apply a stereotype, but don't we all when we hear / read any
description?

I'd apply a similar set of stereo types if the original had just read 'gang
of youths', and my perception would almost certainly be just as
in-accurate.

Catman, that's coz this alleged "history" doesn't exist. Long ago
in a battle of wits I made Bear look like a cretin and he ran off
in a hissy fit. Ever since he's wheeled out this "racist history"
slur at any opportunity but it doesn't hold water. In an ancient
EU thread I made an in-context joke about Italians carrying
stiletto knives and that's about it.

Bear works on the principle that if you throw enough mud some of
it has gotta stick. However each time I ask him for quotes from
Google then he goes strangely silent. He can't quote what was
never said so like a sad git he regurgitates the lie in the hope
it will be propagated by the naive and misinformed.
