Hard to find neutral when 'ot

  1. On topic!!

    Sorry.

Anyway, after a long run it can be virtually impossible to find the Viagra's
neutral with the engine running. Gearchanges are louder too, especially from
neutral into first, and feel notchy and 'dry'. Clutch works fine at all
times - no snatching or slipping and the biting point doesn't move.

It's got mineral 10W40 in it at the moment but I've now discovered Yamaha
    recommend 10W30 for a -10C to 35C temp. range, and 20W40 for a 5C to 45C
range. Would changing the oil to the thicker one, say, make a lot of
difference? What about a synthetic oil?

  2. Some bike boxes respond well to a different oil, so worth a try at the
next change. How long has the current oil been in, and have you noticed
a quality of change deterioration as the oil aged?

As for synthetic, it won't do any harm, but it might be unnecessary.

  3. It's still clean - only a few hundred miles. I changed it because of this
reason but what came out was clean-ish too.
Semi-synth I meant, but I thought it unnecessary too; it just crossed my
mind because I read it handles heat better than mineral. I think we'll try
something a bit ficker, just to see. <Thinks> Although 20W40 isn't going to
be any different from the 10W40 that's in it when it's hot...

    To conclude, yeronner, dunno.

  4. See, normally I'd bung some Molyslip in a gearbox, but with a wet clutch
it's an unknown how it's going to affect it. If it was high power engine
I'd not take the risk, but the 535 clutch probably has lots of tolerance
for some friction modifier in the oil.

  5. Ho yus?
    Heh! "High performance".

Thanks, I'll have an ask about - there's still a few bike shops in East
Kent, including a HD/Buell dealer in Canterbury.
