    So,

Nice sunny lunchtime, Daughter sitting outside McDonalds (Bullsmore
Lane, Enfield) with her college friends when they heard a bit of a
    bang.

That in itself isn't unusual round here (normally a drive-by or the
exploding tyres on a burring mota) but the bits of flying plastic
caught her eye (not literally luckily). ;-)

Turns out a newish Harley, (rider and pillion) somehow met a Mini
crossing the box junction into Mc Donald's.

She doesn't know exactly what happened but one of her mates saw it all
and recounted his observations to the Police.

She doesn't think anyone was hurt past the typical knocks and bruises
suffered when you are knocked off yer bike at slowish speed. The
ambulance attended just as they were going back to college but rider
and pillion were walking about and appeared to be ok.

The Harley had a bent front mudguard (at least) and the Mini had it's
    front bumper removed.

Hopefully if nothing else it will be a reminder to her (if one was
needed) about the consequences of such things, seeing it all as an
    external observer etc.

p.s. Another mate was nearly taken out on his Versys today by ... a
    Mini.

Last week I was following (in my wife's C5 estate) A.N. Other car following
a Mini Cooper S doing 45 in a 60 limit along a long, clear straight.

I overtook the car in front of me, at which point boyo in his Mini put his
foot down, so that I couldn't get past him. When I pulled in behind he gave
me all kinds of "wanker" signs, for reasons unknown, before coming up behind
somebody else doing 45mph and slowing down again.

As we approached the next roundabout (followed by another straight) I backed
right off, so that I had plenty of room to accelerate after the roundabout
and, consequently, was doing 70 and going past him before he even saw me. I
looked across and, I kid you not, he was *shaking* with rage, bouncing
backwards and forwards in his seat like it would give his car some extra
    speed.

Eventually he got by me on the next section of dual carriageway, by driving
so close to the car in front that I think they pulled in for fear of their
own lives, and mouthed "fucking twat" at me before zooming 100 yards ahead
and getting stuck behind somebody else.

The lad driving could only have been in his 20s, but, by god, he was a shit
driver. I'm really hoping I see him again so that I can give my opinion of
    his driving prowess.

    No, it's a Harley.

  9. I should certainly hope so. If she's going to drive Minis at any time
the cost of taking out Harleys will be a mere bumper every so often.

  10. While it's fun to wind them up, be prepared with a roundhouse kick to
the goolies as soon as the ****'s out of the car.

Chuck Norris can do corrective eyesight surgery with a roundhouse kick.

Much as you or I may not want nor like one (ridden my mates, happy to
give it back) they are pretty popular and seem to serve a purpose
(and, (and my initial point) at least have just two wheels).

Out of interest, do you like /any/ cruiser style bikes?

Her has an XV750 and whilst for me it's like sitting on a go kart she
really loves it and not even because of it's looks / design. She loves
it because it's easy to ride, low (she's only 5' 6" and one new and
one bad knee) and critically, comfortable for her back. Anything I
find comfortable (sitting up straight like on the XT, RT, Bullet,
CB250, MZ etc) is unbearably uncomfortable to her.

Similarly at 6' 2" most sports bikes are too cramped and uncomfortable
(+ weight on wrists) for me.

I guess if you are an average build, have sufficient funds and no
posture problems you have access to a whole range of bikes but for
many the choice is much more limited.

Then there is the social thing. You tend to buy what yer mates have,
or find mate who have what you have.

The mate of mine had the MZ and still has said Harley and BM_ K-combo
and goes to camping rallies for all of them (went to the MZ AGM in
    Ireland, on the MZ) ;-)

Plus the ag of replacing the number plate these days (that exploded
    into 100 bits).

Oh, and carting the loose bumper home .. in a mini. ;-)

I can't ever see her driving a mini. She doesn't even want to drive
this Ka (as a learner box) but want's a SWB Landy?

Quite right too. Driving around in a Landy with the roof & door-tops
off & screen folded down is something every youngster should experience.

Staying in the car is a fave. Then as they reach for the (locked) door
handle, floor it. The look on his face was priceless.

The special thing about HDs is, or at least was until recently, that
they were very poorly engineered - in pretty much every respect. The
firm made a virtue out of this, called it "character", charged extra
for it and said it was a lifestyle thing. Not everyone falls for this
    line.

    What purpose do they serve?

They're slow, they don't go around corners and on the whole are useless
    for long trips.

The only purpose of them is to let the world know you're so far into the
    closet you've entered Narnia.

I think you'll find that there plenty of Harleys available that will
see off either of your bikes.
Posting about other bikes being slow when you ride a BMW R100RT is
sufficient to let the World know that you're on another planet.
