I was somewhat surprised to find that my position stayed the same when
I only entered my salary as when I entered our combined salaries.
There must be more poor people out there than I realised.

mine moved down 1 %age point when I removed Jude's income.
It's not so many years ago that I'd have been in the middle of that
    plot.

Actually, now I think about it, it is. 20-25 at least. Must be down to
getting old or something. And yet it still feels like it wasn't so
long ago when I used to have the choice between eating tomorrow or
getting a third pint in down the pub.

    Happy days - not!

    That's two of us.
Call that being poor? I used to have to get the bus rather than fly to
the Alps when I wanted to go climbing.
It was purgatory but once I was there I didn't care.

I think even guage is too strong a word, unless they restrict it to
PAYE employees with zero additional income other than salary. But
either way, it's still utterly pointless as a guage of how well off you
are compared to others, as they claim.

Wow, that's poor. And I bet you slept in a bivvy bag while you were
    there, eh?

I used a tent when I was in the valley and a snow cave when I camped
    high on the mountains.

I'm sure there's a good chunk of the 98% of the population earning
less that won't feel hard done by.

That's how you chose to spend your income.

Yes. I. Know. Me & tens of millions of other people, including you. OK
I give up, that site is indeed a perfect guage as to how well off you
are. Someone on 60k per year with a 1,500/month mortage on a house in
negative equity & 800 per month child maintenance payments is better
off than someone on 59k per year living in an inherited house with no
mortgage who's never had any children. Silly me for thinking otherwise.

<shrug> They _chose_ to have a huge mortgage & children.

Neither of them are me. But if I had to choose, I'd definitely go for
    the second one. Wouldn't everyone?

Oh ffs! YES. I. KNOW.[1] Pray tell what that has to do with the site's
claims? Does it claim to be a guage of how well off you are *if* you
never spend any money on anything? No, it doesn't.

[1] Although they may not of course chosen to have children.

I don't understand your problem with this. It sets out to compare
earnings and does just that. If you want to deduct your mortgage
payments then why not feel free to do so?

We also have large amounts of mortgage debt, but also significant
amounts of investments. Does the fact that we're putting a large
proportion of our income into property, employee share-buying schemes
and pensions make us poorer than if we lived in the tiny flat we rent
in Basel and pocketed the rest? No, of course not.

That's exactly what it does, but not what it /claims/ to do - that's my
problem with it. If it just said 'this will compare your income to the
rest of the population', that'd be fine & I wouldn't have said a word.
Because it doesn't tell you to, so most people won't, making it even
    more pointless.
Depends on property prices, your company's performance & the pension
fund performance. There are many, many people out there who are now
considerably poorer than they would've been had they lived in their
tiny flat in Basel & stuffed the spare cash under the mattress.

Sorry, I may be missing something, but as far as I can see the site is
quite clear that this is all it's doing. The very first line says
"When you think about your income, do you feel rich, poor, or just
plain average?" What part of this is giving you so much of a problem?

    Ace, May 30, 2009

Well for a start, being (or feeling) rich, poor or average doesn't have
a direct correlation to income. It's just badly worded, & should say
something like 'when you think about your income, do you feel it's
higher, lower or about the same as the average'.

Then further down it says 'you can find out where you lie in the Great
Britain income distribution, *and* how many people are better or worse
off than you'. Again, if they mean 'and how many people have higher or
lower incomes than you', then that's what they should say.
