As per subject are they any good? I know it won't go round corners
very well but then neither do I.
They seem cheap used - do the 'normal' harleyites shun them due to the
    new fangled water cooling?

I think you might have been reading the wrong reviews mate. The V-Rod goes
    round corners very well!
All in all it's a great engine with plenty of grunt and whips up to speed
PDQ. Handles bloody well if not better and is a great bike to ride.
The biggest bad point I found on it was the fuel tank range = not very far
between fill-ups! and the pillion has a terrible time on the back with the
standard seat. Change it and it makes a good 2 fun bike. Just plan your fuel
    stops well!
Go to you nearest Harley dealer next weekend it's the launch of the 08
models. Take your license and go thrash one.

I'm beginning to think that the one I tried was a bad one, as the
handling felt all over the place and the engine - despite being loud -
wasn't anything to write home about

Perhaps I should have said that the handling was all over the place
compared to my Sportster, and the engine was disappointing compared also
    to my Sportster.

So my experience was not that good, even for a Harley

    You obviously wasn't riding a V-Rod ;o)

Have a google for reports on the V-Rod, it is a very surprising bike!

Yebbut, you're comparing a slightly modified bike to a standard
    Harley...

    <thinks>

I don't think there are any standard ones out there as soon as they
    leave the showroom, are there?

I'd love a V Rod. I saw one in the flesh and thought it looked amazing.

The report or the bike ;o/

I must admit, I personally don't like the V-Rod. I had one for a day on test
and got fed up with stopping every 80 miles or so to fill it up. It was
    thirsty as well.
It rode very well and handled pretty good I thought. The engine is superb
for a twin. It really does pull well.
    I wouldn't buy one though.
I've just sold the Ultra [1] and to be honest, comparing the 96 cu in engine
against the 1550 stg 2 conversion I had on the King, it was very poor. When
I get the next Harley it will be a King again, but based on the 1450 so that
I can put the Big Bore kit and cams in. I doubt I'd buy the 96 (1584 cc)
engine again for a while, the emission shite has totally strangled the
    farking thing.

Have a squint at Victory, I think they look great. The new Night Rod looks
    menacing in black!
There is also a Korean company making a V-rod look alike, that seems very
good for about the 5K mark IIRC.
I'll try and find the details and post them up.

    It's got dragpipes on it...

Well, actually by now it's got one dragpipe on it but I need to pick up
some bits from the local Harley place before I can put the original
downpipes back on and mount the V&H slipons...
