Just been looking at the news about the asian earthquake. What odds do you
reckon we would get on owd bin laden being buried in his lair seeing as
it is commonly accepted he is on the Pakistan/India border?

It would be funny though that GWB with all his special forces etc couldn't
    get him but nature did.

Even if it had happened, do you think we'd get to hear about it?

Bin Laden as an individual elicits no emotional response from me and TBH
I don't really care one way or the other what has become of him.

However, I've begun to sympathise or, perhaps more accurately, to start
to understand why young British Asian lads are taking steps against their
    own country.

You'll have to explain it to me then.

Before we start lets get one thing straight I'm not agreeing with them
but can see why they're doing it.

I think you've misunderstood, it's not about freedom in this country but
self defence on behalf of another country.

The view is that the West (UK/US) is attacking and oppressing independent
Arab nations and imposing its values, economics and culture on those
countries in the name of freedom and democracy [1].

These nations are seen as under attack and subsequently at war with the
West, and its an unequal struggle.

If we accept the point that we are at war [2] what's the difference
between the bombs on London buses and the bombing of Dresden? Different
delivery methods and on a slightly smaller scale - same intentions though.

Wouldn't you fight to defend something you believed in?

Unfortunately, for us, there is a rich seam of potential recruits in
Britain who do see there is something worth fighting for.

The more we condemn those who impinge on our freedom and we are perceived
to continue to impinge and attack others' freedom the more they'll come.

[1] Do /you/ believe that's the real reason?
[2] We may not think we are but they certainly see it that way.

Then they need to change this system in a way that works - democracy/big
business etc - blowing people up _will not_ achieve this "balance".

Blair et al won the last election through the support of some of these
areas - to me that's cutting off your nose to spite your face.

I understand their anger, the whole Israeli situation is an
abomination. I don't understand the point of their response though, it
will never achieve anything they want. I completely fail to accept our
mealy mouthed responses to their actions however.

The only thing that bombs will achieve is to make certain that I'll
never stand next to an Asian with a rucksack on a train.

Aren't some of the major Labour strongholds in areas with large Muslim

How the hell am I supposed to throw more than 2 or 3 out of a train
door in the limited time I'll get when it stops? Perhaps I'll go for
just ripping their rucksacks off and slinging it out of the window as
    we go along.

There are substantial Muslim populations in some former industrial areas
which remain Labour but I think I've totally missed your point.

Although I suspect you've also missed it as this is nothing to do with
domestic politics and more to do with an idealistic wish to join the
fight against the oppressors of smaller nations.

Volunteering to fight in a 'just' war in the way the young men queued up
in 1914 and again in 1936 to join the International brigades but on a
    smaller scale and over here.

  20. Yes, up to a point. These days, I'd rather simply operate switches and
arrange things, rather than go out and acually do 'stuff'.
    There's never been a shortage of young thickies wanting a fight;
whatever culture we're talking about. It's a function of youth.
