Have G&G killed aus.moto?

I think it's just that people don't bother with usenet these days, going
to web forums instead. Most PC users haven't heard of usenet.

    Reminds me of Midget Wrestling.

  4. I don't think it is anyone killing aus.moto. Usenet grew from the
quest for info with the high overheads of anything but text based. The
generation of PC heads now are moving to that as bandwidth opens up.
As for the comment about a moderated web-based discussion, I'm on a
web-based music forum that gets discussions as heated as here. The
moderators rarely step in unless it gets really vicious or breaches
obvious laws (kiddy porn for eg). But that can happen here as well and
has in the past. It's moderated by reporting abuse to the abuser's
    ISP.

There is a 3D usegroup that helped me get my business off the ground
in the early 90s. It's pretty much a dead duck now (like about 1 post
a month); information like that has now moved to web-based groups.

The sad loss is that there are so many of those groups that we have
lost that networking central point that helped everyone hook up for
rides all over the country a decade ago. The new era seems to be
smaller local groups that have less interaction over a national (and
    international (hi Jeffles)) stage.

  5. Without the high overheads. Check before posting Kevin. Duh.

It's a shame, that. I find the forums so big and unwieldy. I hate having to
flick between boards and go from page to page to bloody page - it's all a
bit overwhelming. Give me Usenet any day.

Personally I can't stand all the wank attached to forum posts. All the
stupid animated smilies, gifs and crap.
I just want to read plain old black-and-white text.

  9. How can you when you have half the group "killfiled "??

Yeah, that's the other thing. I like a post to be a post and have words in
it. No ads. No ani-bloody-mations. No no no! I ran away from a forum once
when it seemed that ppl thought an entire line of fucking smiley thingies
with different expressions constituted a message! The Egyptians did
    hieroglyphics well. Forums don't.

Words (even harsh ones, eek, sometimes!) are preferable.

Ha; you're never here often enough to make a difference Nathan!
What's the matter with you; don't you have to do long boring night-shifts
with nothing to keep you company but a laptop? (or speed-camera duty?)
You're giving coppers a bad name.

Oh; I'm a huuuge advocate of killfiles and I really encourage others to use
    them too.
Sadly a lot won't and it's those posters who are drifting off (and casual
posters who aren't staying) because all they're seeing is this torrent of
    belligerent stupidity.

Yes... it's generally accepted that usenet discussion groups have been
declining in popularity for some years now.

The only thing that's keeping usenet going these days is the increasing
use of it for file transfers (instead of p2p networks which are
    increasingly being monitored).

Don't you think it's just a tad inconsistent to be complaining that
Marty is attempting to control what people say and do in the newsgroup
and then in the next sentence you attempt to control what he does and says?

Or if they have it's as an alternative to p2p for serious downloaders...

Amen to that Betty; half a page of animated coloured bullshit and quotes and
then the scant few original words are so misspelt and poorly-written that
you have to read it five times to get sense from it!
    Arrgh.

Well I must be missing them too Betty 'cause when I tune in each evening
there's maybe 4-or-five new posts and the next thread is "Leather or
    Textile" from 06/07/2009.
