He had "a mere seven seconds" to react.

  1. The whole action was appalling with the police behaving illegally.

The reason we retain some rights is because of people like her willing
to put their personal safety and liberty on the line.

Every country lets you protest as long as you stay within the law. In
this one, staying within the law means not protesting near Parliament.a

Small problem. It's a right to demonstrate in a non-violent manner. Is
lobbing potentially noxious liquids about "non-violent"?
The carton said "Orange Juice" on it (fair trade, I hope). But even if he
could have read that, in the time and whilst it was in her hand in the
heat of the moment, how's he to know that's what's actually in it?

Orange juice isn't a sufficiently offensive weapon to justify a baton
    in self defence.

Does it really matter what one throws?

Provided, of course, that the officer was able to assess that the fluid
that the "hyperactive", "erratic" and "aggressive" person was throwing
    at him was harmless.

I am unsurprised at the acquittal.

Sure; demonstrate, not antagonise those trying to restore order and
    peace.

How was he to know it was orange juice, after so many other demos have
had protesters throwing acids and other harmful liquids at police. She
was being a fucking nuisance, she wouldn't listen when told to back
off, she started spraying an unknown liquid around at Police after
she'd been given sufficient warning about what would happen if she
carried on. I'd have knocked the **** out of her, not just backhanded
and tapped her with the baton.

Everyone goes on about the 7 seconds that Sgt Smellie had to assess the
situation and act, that's the same 7 seconds she had to calm down,
assess what would happen if she didn't and back the **** off to save
    herself getting hurt

There's only so far that you can push the politically correct liberal
view before it falls over, and standing up for those who are so
obviously in the wrong does nothing to help

As someone who has danced the 2Step with Plod I'd say if you put Coppers in
the line of the likes of a G20 riot then expect them to behave with a
certain Joie de Vivre. She was at the very least being disrespectful and
exceedingly argie and so deserved a good slap.
Coppers dumped into these riot situations should be carrying electric stun
batons and backed up with rubber bullets and water cannons anyway and Loz is
right, the G20 lot deeply deserve it.

I've never been hit with a rubber bullet, but was once water cannoned
off the beach at Cannes - quite funny, but painful.

It's meant to be I expect. Nice if it carries a dye so the workshy cunts
can be traced if they manage to flee the scene.

this wasn't dyed, and in any case, we all needed a wash anyway.

They're funny in Cannes about back-packers trying to kip on the beach,
    it seems.

It's not a good example of staying within the law though, is it.

Personally i think she should have been tazered in the tits, as it
    makes for a better headline.

A study done a few years ago showed that police tend to use the 2nd
most lethal weapon in their arsenal more. IOW, if hey carry only a
baton, they tend not to use it much, but if they carry a baton and a
pistol, they will resort to the baton more often. Give them a machine
gun, and they feel more justified using a pistol. Giving police more
lethal weapons means they will use more force.

I've always felt it was a bit masochistic to argue with someone
carrying a weapon. No matter their training, arguing with them will
increase their adrenalin, testosterone, and attitude. Push them far
enough, and eventually they'll use their weapon.
