Head Race bearings

Getting a new front tyre fitted today, turns out the head race bearings are
    fucked.

Talking about 2 hours labour to replace, and maybe £50 for the bearings
themselves. Is it me, or does that sound like a lot for bearings?

    TIA

I'm hoping to DIY with a mate who has many shiny things. Cheers for the
    estimate on the bearing.

  4. Full dealer retail (ripoff), unless your bike uses something exotic. A
set of bearings typically would be a tenner from BSL.

The bearings for the Wing were cheaper from M&P than from my local
friendly bearing supplier. And they were the right ones.

That doesn't just apply to the 1200.

I reckon it'd take me at least two hours to do on the Guzzi - which is
    unfaired and not particularly complicated.

  11. That is just so much like Honda. That's why I don't like the marque.

  12. Just what I was thinking.

Pattern taper rollers are about £35, yes, but I wouldn't be surprised if
the genuine article was £50. Actually, I remember that genuine Honda
cup-and-cone ball bearing head races for the Benly were about £45, which
    was a shock.

Looks like the consensus is to let them get on with it, then.

  14. Demand chain - BSL (eg) wouldn't have the same need to get them in
    regularly.

  15. That's the problem. You have to take it apart to find out - then it's
immobilised anyway and you might find the only source is the ripoff
stockist. Not a problem once you've done it the first time, it's much
easier to repeat and you know where to go; if you do a reasonable
mileage you might need to do it again in a couple of years.

Dunno about reasonable mileage. This is only 12500 miles old.
I say only, but I have no idea how long it's supposed to last anyway.

Market forces being what they are, I'll bet the original bearings are
the cheapest and lowest quality that Mr. Honda et al can get away
with, i.e. that meet their minimum durability and performance spec.

If you know what you're doing it should be possible to get better
quality replacements elsewhere, except in those cases where the
    bearing is a unique design.

    Mutter mutter Kawasaki wheel bearings...

.... and, if it's the Honda bit, it comes with a dust/grease seal to
replace the one you smashed to bits getting the lower bearing off the
    steering stem.
