Headlight modulator?

What's the status with these things in NSW etc? I had another bike pass
me a week or two ago with his headlight flashing about once or twice a
    second.

I've got this $10 headband LED torch which has four or five flash
patterns as well as the "allways on". It's surprisingly visible for
quite a distance. Thought it could be mounted pretty easily above to the
    headlight.

Any thoughts on usefulness? You know the thing, stories of being saved
from being hit by a Toorak cruiser full of kids being taken to school
while their mum is texting their late note to the teacher or something
    etc.

  2. i prefer two lights so the viewer can triangulate in order to judge
    distance better

mount 'em as far apart as you can

visibility is all well and good but it is still hard to judge distance
    from one point

It's illegal, but I suspect you'd get away with it for a long time
before a copper pinged you for it

Well aside from the fact Marty has provided a link showing it *is* legal
during daylight *ONLY* - my recollection was the rules said something
like only emergency vehicles can have flashing lights

Just as an aside, I wonder how the globes last?

It's because the thing I've got is LEDs that I thought it was usable without
    having to replace globes.

When I bought the thing from a stall at a computer fair they had red ones and
what I thought were all white ones. Turns out they were mostly blue, but the
colour was hand written in Chinese on each one - not my language of choice. I
bet the coppers love flashing blue lights on motorcycles. :)

    Thanks for that.

That's between three and five times a second (approx). Guess I've just got to count
them for a few seconds, and wire in a photocell circuit, and mount it to the bike,
and see if I get run over by someone who didn't see me.

This is because you're regularly stopped by coppers who can tell the
difference between 3 and 6 times per second is it?

Guess I've just got to count
but if you see them then really it shouldn't happen

I've had one for a couple of years now and swear by it (not at it.....)
It's a small technical point but it doesn't flash, it varies between bright
    and dim,
not on and off - hence Modulator not Flasher.

Globes not a problem, still on the same one.

Funny the number of times people point out "Your headlight's flashing Mate".
I would love to have the balls to say "Yeah, the guy who sold it to me said
    every dumb
c*** would see it" but I don't, so I just say "Yeah, it's meant to" and let
    it go at that.
    BUT ONE DAY.....

Once met the chap who wrote it into the ADRs - some professor bloke -
he was most interested in the make of modulator, number of years used etc,
I think he was taking notes each time he saw one on the road.

The ADR does stipulate that the headlamp may be modulated (High or Low Beam
    but not both)
I don't think that it covers adding some LED headlamp (not as effective IMHO
    as 100w QH)
    and flashing that.

But, hey, whatever floats your boat...
