    Bad luck old bean.

It can be quite a variable experience for different people but the two best
pieces of advice to start with are buy Bernstein's Diabetes Solution book.
It explains everything well enough. Ignore the NHS diet plan, which is
    generic and high carb (duh).

If you still make some insulin and your resistance isn't through the roof
then weaning yourself off bread, breakfast cereals etc and getting shot of
belly fat will mostly sort you out. IIRC Darren manages his without any
    drugs now.

Most good GP surgeries have a Diabetic Nurse now, which can help a lot. Yes
you get vague and sometimes contradictory advice but that's because the
condition isn't completely understood and varies by person.

No need to be so divisive about it.

  5. Steve Redgrave developed Diabetes and after attempting to stabilise it
with diet etc. returned to rowing and hard exercise and controlled it
that way. One problem with uncontrolled Diabetes is that the nerve
damage mentioned above can lead to blindness.

Blindness, loss of feeling, loss of circulation, suppurating flesh,
gangrene, limb amputation, kidney failure, death.

Jude's mum and later, uncle (mum's brother), both succumbed through
this route, not exclusively in that order. Not nice.

Oh, and of course they were undergoing treatment the whole time.

One of the things they don't tell you is that you can do everything right
    and still go titsup.
Mine was well controlled for 5 years then went off the scale. I'm now on
4x500mg glucophage and under 1000kCal a day and it has come back in line. I
can understand many people can't hack such an extreme dietery regime.

In some cases T2 is inability of the body to utilise insulin - there can
actually be over production of insulin as the body struggles to control
    glucose levels.

I think one of the books suggested that surplus insulin makes you feel
hungry and can lead to over eating - but my failing memory may be playing
tricks, the books are up on so anyone who
needs to can read it up for themselves.

And according to one of the diabetes websites - nob rot.

Apparently the body gets rid of sugar any way it can, including through
sweating. This leads to yeast infection under the foreskin and itchy nob
    syndrome.

Yeah someone can become insulin resistant, genetics/diet/weight, which
pushes their pancreas into over production and eventual burnout. Can also be
resistance and under production, but perhaps prolonged undiagnosed
resistance leads to reduced production then subsequent discovery in some
people. My understanding is it's not well understood.

It seems like high cholesterol might be a pointer to a pre disposition
towards resistance or an indicator of an unhealthy lifestyle which will lead
    to resistance.

I was fit and active with a 29" waist when I developed very high cholesterol
around age 28 so became a strict veggie. But looking back I probably also
became resistant and a high carb veggie diet wasn't a great solution. Then
when an accident whacked my pancreas (combined with concussion) at age 43 I
    got caught in both directions.

Some people become diabetic from head trauma alone.

But I rationalise generally that you cover the bases by
    # reducing your carb loading and therefor insulin/processing requirement
    # tip consumption towards protein
    # reduce overall consumption of calories
    # take at least some exercise

We generally consider a male diet to be around 2500kCal a day but frankly
for an over 40's sugar mong with a sedentary job that's bollocks IMHO. More
like 1500-2000. And when it all goes pete tong you either bite the bullet
and dip much lower still, with a really tight rein on what you eat, or watch
the retinopathy scans go wrong (or not watch....) and enjoy dissolving
health. Health services do a poor job of highlighting what a *very*
    unpleasant death it can become.

Most posters to this NG who have succumbed seem to have found a balance,
with or without medication, which tends to suggest it isn't rocket science
    ;o)

There are some diabetics newsgroups for anyone inclined to look.

Unfortunately none are binaries on the Virgin server.
