    The XL, obviously.

When we collected it, matey said that he had tried but couldn't start
it. Neither could I last weekend so I figured I'll mount the choke
cable that I aquired from Dave Silver and try again.

So, off comes the tank, the cable gets fiddled in and the tank goes
back on again. At that point I noticed that matey would be up for a
Petrol Muppet award - the tank was about as dry as my throat is at the
moment. A couple of other quick checks later - spark, kinda present,
compression, well, some, points gap, correctish but the points cam
does look a bit worse for wear - a quick trip to the local Shell
    emporium and...

    Arse.

Looks like I'll be spending next weekend going over the three
requirements again - check the ignition to see if it actually sparks
when required and not at random, check the valve clearances and wiggle
them a bit to see if one of them's stuck and reset the carb.

Oh, and the hammerite'd coil and condenser haven't done anything for
my faith in the PO's skills. Ah fuggit, let's see if I can get it to
run - if I can I'll just put it together and get it MOT'd so I can
ride it, if not it'll get pushed into another corner and I'll sort out
the CB first because then I'll be looking at a more or less full
    stripdown.

Time to fetch some beer and get drunk, methinks.

And following up on my own crap, I think the ignition timing is off -
currently awaiting new points and a condensor from Dave Silver. Not to
mention a new plug as well...

You misspelled "doesn't stop the conrods coming out through the front of the
    crankcase".
