    How about now? I'll start...

    - One traditionally cuts a cuts a cross in the stalk of a sprout
before cooking because they are <crack of thunder> the Devil's
    Vegetable!

    Steaming? You fucking poof.

They should boiled within an inch of their lives and then boiled some
    more.

    Lovely.

I wonder if it's too early to put them on for Xmas lunch?

No, the best way to do sprouts is to wash them, peel off the outer
leaves, dice them lightly, then tip the whole fucking lot in bin.

    hth.

  11. I thought the cross cuts let the farts out of the sprouts before you ate
    them.

    No.

Seriously, if there's a hint of the taste of sprout about them, I
    won't like it.

    If there isn't, why bother?

Indeed. We've done this before, at which juncture I suggested the
addition of sweet chestnuts into the mix, which takes it from being
merely a way to make sprouts edible to a sublime dish in its own
right. Dunno if you've tried it yet, but you should.

Well it took long enough to mention the chestnuts. Having your own tree
    helps.

Indeed. Although ours tried to die on us a couple of years back, so is
currently not producing. Should be some by next year.

In any event, although roasting your own on the proverbial open fire
is somewhat special, when it comes to using them in cooking I find the
effort involved in shelling/skinning them far too much hassle these
    days.

Used to collect loads from around Woburn way and make all sorts of
stuff[1], but somehow one's priorities change...

[1] Port and chestnut soup springs to mind, for example. Yummy, it
    were.
