I just got this in an email from the group I ride with and thought I would pass it on... Subject: Helmet Laws avert theft?!?! A recent publishing of a study on Helment laws: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---- Helmet Laws Produce Unexpected Benefit Did you know that helmet laws seem to deter motorcycle theft? That's what researchers found when they looked at statistics from the state of Texas and three European regions. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, this may happen when potential thieves don't have helmets, and they know that riding "helmet-less" would attract police attention. The Institute reports that, after Texas enacted its universal helmet law, motorcycle thefts in 19 Texas cities decreased 44% from 1988 to 1990. The statistics originated from the Texas Department of Public Safety. After helmet laws were enacted in some places in Europe, motorcycle thefts dropped: 24% in London, 36% in The Netherlands, and 60% in the former West Germany. Currently, 20 states and the District of Columbia have helmet laws covering all riders. Another 27 states have laws on the books covering some riders-usually those younger than 18. Three states have no helmet laws: Colorado, Illinois, and Iowa.
Interesting.. LOL.. They say that every cloud has a silver lining.. I do think I would prefer to make my own choices about wearing a helmet, or not.. Good post IceMan..See ya', later.. Your friend in Irving Bill Walker
<<<snip happens>>>>> sooooooo, howz about we enact helmet laws for cars and reduce auto theft??? I crossed the state line between Ariz. and Calif. last year and when I got to the inspection station, the inspector reminded me that Calif. has a helmet law.. So.. I just sat there in the line of traffic, dug out my helmet and put that puppy on.. Then I had to repact the bike while everyone fumed and waited... That inspector was laughing her ass off while she watched me.. I sure can be a jerk, sometimes, but I would like to say that is not my usual likeable self... So there... I do wear a helmet at times... And in Calif, one needs all the protection they can afford... Those drivers out there are all nuts.... Your friend in Irving Bill Walker
Silly me! I thought that riding around with a locked wheel on a motorcycle would attract more attention than whether or not the rider was wearing a helmet... I guess cops don't notice such things though.
You gotta stop locking the front one, though. These thrives just ride wheelies all the way to the chop shop. I thought that was an interesting statistic, but you know about 90% of statistics are made up on the spot. --Fullstate
We are gonna have to invite Rob and his bride to go with us again, soon as she gets over her puny spell.. Stump puller, my happy ass... Anemic Harley, I'll buy that... LOL Your friend in Irving Bill Walker
Yeah, I'd like to do some more riding. We might get a few more good weekends, yet. Never does get too bad around these parts. --Fullstate
For Fullstate and Bill and Brian, Erin is recovering from colon cancer, she was operated on last month and started 6 months of chemo today. We'll have her out on the road again in no time. She was diagnosed just a few weeks after our ride out to Cranfills Gap. We knew she was sick but didn't know how serious. Her prognosis is excellent. People with her type of cancer, with the treatment she's getting, have an 85 to 90% cure rate. Rob
Hey Rob - Send my kindest regards and best wishes to Erin. Same to you as well, it's always a team effort to get through these types of things. I am glad to hear that it was caught early on and that she is well on the road to recovery. We'll do some riding when she is up for it, again! --Fullstate
I really do hate to hear about Erin. On a note, and before I knew about this, I was talking with another guy this morning at breakfast. We were making idle conversations and a mention was made about hair removal methods and how painful they are and how women have to always mess with it. This guy said "just do chemo and then shaving will be obsolete for a while". I made a comment that it might be easier to just move to a nuclear plant than doing chemo. I know that might not help, but I hope it can make a bit of light of the situation. I hope Erin does well and is back to feeling better soon.
